The appearance comes off very dark with no light passing through it at all. The head is a little creamy with minimal lacing. The smell comes off piney, little citrus, and some maltiness. The taste is good with a nice blend of hoppy and maltiness to it, a little bitter on the back end but definitely a nice transition. The mouthfeel lingers from a slight malty taste into a piney flavor that fades. Overall, this is a good run of a Black IPA and the brewers involved didn’t go crazy with swinging it in one direction or another. They blended it well and both brewers did a great job. On tap at GI Clybourne. Aroma: Fruity hops, mango and dark fruits. Appearance: Dark brown, low head. Taste: Hoppy, slightly roasted flavor, some chocolate. Palate: Full bodied, med low carb. Draft at GI Clybourn. I’m guessing that this is a new batch because it really popped in the nose. Pours a murky dark brown, not black. Faint char and then a really bright and soft citrus and resin. Nice hop nose. some of the malt comes through in support. On taste, really nice bitterness and some really nice citrusy hop notes and a light cocoa roast. not much caramel. Clean finish, a touch thin bodied. Really nice.

Pours pretty close to black with a good tan head and some sticky lacing as it makes its way down. The nose brings forward a good dose of roasted malt as well as some deeper pine and earthy hops. The flavor is pretty similar with a good level of bitterness driving home the hops that sit atop a solid roasted malt base. Good light to medium body with a solid, dry finish. A really nice take on the style that drank quite, quite well.

On tap at GI into a tasting glass...Pours dark mahogany with a light tan head that is really creamy, good lacing...The aroma and taste are both super interesting. Its an ipa with a roasted malt background. Aroma reminds me a of a light porter. Tasted on 1/26/11 on draft at the Clybourn Brewpub. Pours dark but clear amber with an average off-white head that leaves smooth lace. The nose is dark malt, lightly herbal hops, a hint of vanilla, and resin bitterness. The flavor is dark malt with some chocolate up front, moving to resin bitterness, dark chocolate, and coffee bitterness on the back. Snifter on tap at the Clybourne brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice dark blackish hue, brownish edges, frothy grey head dies to a thicker ring, ok lacing. Aromas are quite nice.. Moving from citrusy grapefruit to florals, grassy, roasty dark malts. Not too heavy, but hops prevalent. Initial is medium bodied, grapefruit and floral hops engage, a prominent bitterness falls into roast and toasty, some biscuity sweetness in the end. Big florals and grapefruit remain, not too big or cloying, I love the touches of roasty malts that just let the big American hops do their thing. Refreshing and bitter, a big blast of American citrusy hops.. Roast lingers way at the back. Well made for my tastes. Lighter bodied, big hops, lingering roast.. The malt base stays at bay.
