Draft on tap at Belgian Fest (Chicago, IL). Pours a richer reddish copper pour, brownish with good haziness. A frothy tannish head is sizable, with some decent lacing. Aromas are peppery and whiskey laden, some pepper and spice, wet oak, spirit. Gentle fruit, lots of red fruit and cherries, some cranberry, dried fruit. Gentle sweetness, the beer itself starts tart and sour. Cherryskins, dry and fruity. Red fruit, sourness and tart elements grow. Some toffee, toast, and bready malts. Gentle barrel, spice, a kick of cough syrup/medicinal qualities at times. Middle is a bit sweet, tart middle grows, dry and tart lingering qualities. Touches of sticky sweetness or carmelized elements make some plays, but remains tart and cherry, a touch of pie character, as we move into the finish. Ok, interesting beer. Draft at Belgian Fest. Pours a deep reddish brown. The nose is super strong, heavy on the barrel and tart. Lots of cherry and vanilla, bourbon. On tasting, it’s almost a completely different beer. The Belgian phenols come through, along with some vanilla and cherry. Distinct tartness overall. Much more drinkable than the aroma would lead you to believe. The Dark Strong character kind of takes over. Moderately high bitterness as well. Decent.
