Sampler pour on tap at the Clybourn Brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich deep blackish brown pour, richer haze, some glow in the body and edges are apparent with firm frothy light brown head that dies to a film and laces ok. Aromas are oak and barrel, vanilla and gentle spirit. Some red fruit, toast, and mellow caramel, toffee, and spice. Barrel a little dominant for me. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, barrel striking some firm hammer blows. Oak, vanilla, and spirit mix with toast, darker malts, and gentle red fruit, cherry and berry, some toastiness, roast and faint cocoa feel. Earth, soil, gentle Belgian influence and fruit as the barrel covers this up fairly well as we move on. Backend shows some spirit, dryness, lingering toast, barrel, vanilla, some spirit. Gentle spice. I enjoyed the base beer here and the Farmers Market fruit treatment, but the barrel leaves this a bit rough for me. Ok. NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 7, 2013
UPDATED: JAN 11, 2013 *Illinois rating #1000* Draft at GI Clybourn. Pours a deep brown-black, hazy. Tan sticky head. Nose is big oak and vanilla, some maple notes & bourbon. Some odd esters and a peppery note. On tasting, big and oaky on the palate, quite dry and thin. The barrel is not really well-supported here. Molasses and charred black malt on the finish overall. On tap at the brewpub... Pours, at first, a deeper cola like consistency, less intense auburn edges, and topped with a thin creamy light beige head that reduces down towards the edges... Aroma of light roast, a fair bit of bourbon, and a pinch of dry earthy fruitiness and vanilla throughout... Initiated with a biurbonyroast flavor profile with cocoa accents to go alongside a dark fruit and pear fruit profile that surfaces midway through and lingers on through the earthy lightly dry finish. Medium bodied with an earthy feel and adequate level of carbonation.
