Dark pour tan whispy head. Think sour blueberry skin and a wierd sweet note. Huge full rich creamy palate. Vanilla bourbon and dry oak in the front w/ a fruit skin taste coming through in the swallow. (GTMW) 1FastSTi (3360) - Glendale, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 19, 2011
Tap at Romans’ Pub. I was told this was 10% by the printed material, but one of the brewers there said 14%. Either way, alcoholic flavors were no where to be had. Tastes more like 6%. The beer pours to a rusty mahogany body with a lasting starch white head. The aroma is fruity/jammy with blackberries and grape jelly. The flavor is blackberry jam with a muted everything else. Not overly strong in flavors. More mellow. The palate is medium bodied, nicely textured, and smooth. Hard to believe the high ABV. Hair6a11 (1481) - Illinois, USA - MAY 22, 2011
On tap at the Goose Island Rare and Reserve tasting; pour is dark, clear, honey amber. Blackberries and strawberries, an earthy note, mild funk, and a mild booziness is present on the nose, I found, initially, that this brew impressed; however, the alcohol burn feels a little off putting. Anyway, I really enjoyed the blueberry funk of this brew; they may have felt like the lactobacillus was a mistake, but I think it works fairly well. I notice later a bit of cheese, coupled with that earthy note from the barrel aging. Blueberries, strawberries, it does share some character with their 3 sour lineup. Anyway, perhaps some aging would have done this one some good, but this is a nice one, overall TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - MAY 19, 2011
Draft on tap at Acre GI Invasion event (Chicago, IL). Pours a very dark near crimson red pour, a good small tannish haze stays as a thick layer, laces ok. Aromas are berries, sweet malts, touches of Bourbon, blackberries, wet oak, vanilla, sweet sticky caramel. A bit sweet and sticky, the BCS barrel still shines through, red from the blackberries. Initial is medium bodied preaching tart blackberries and a touch of hot Bourbon, BCS, wet oak, vanilla, decent lactic acidity, growing tart berries, funky bretty horseblanket, hay, touches of blue cheese into the backend. Wet oak, tartness, telltale Bourbon spirit and vanilla. A bit boozy overall, the blackberries make this better than the base but I almost feel like the Bourbon/depleted BCS barrel is stronger in this version, sticky caramel and vanilla really comes through. Doesn’t get medicinal, the blackberries are nice, decent sour acidic kick with growing brett, but the barrel really steals the show which is almost a detriment. Good flavors and appearance, a bit Bourbony on the nose though and a little sticky sweet on the palate. Ok.
