COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla,carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall;

Editor’s Note: Baudoinia Fulton & Wood Series offering (And the Low Storage entry from FoBAB 2012) is simply Bourbon County Stout aged in the same barrels. It has been alted as it offers no different recipe or barrel type simply the presence of a distillers fungus on the barrels that adds no distinct characteristic to the beer from the fungus itself except for possible oxygen exposure changes. While Brewers Intent indicates that they consider it a new beer, no true distinction aside from this oxidation amount and possible aging time differences separates the beers. It’s essentially a single barrel Bourbon County version something we have always treated as regular Bourbon County Stout in the past.

Bottle I got from someone, I dont even remember who (I Think it was brandon (notalush) in secret santa) Thanks anyway, whoever you are! This is 08/05 release, so this is working on a little more than a year. So I have had many bourbon beers, and this one is slightly disappointing to me. Sure, its got the huge bourbon flavor and finish, but it doesnt have the nice balance and its so overwhelming flavors of bourbon that it is almost sickening to my stomach. Nose has some vanilla, chocolate, and coffee, but a large amount of alcohol. Taste is similar, with a huge burning sensation from the alcohol. I hear this beer is 20 dollars for 4, which is 5 dollars a whack, which it is not worth at all. This would be ok, if it wasnt so hot. I wanted to like this one, I really did, but I almost had trouble finishing it. Not really pleasing at all to me.

The aroma is a sweet roasted bourbon malt. The body is a jet black with minimal head. The taste is a warming bourbon influenced roasted malt. It is very palate warming.

2016 bottle at 13.8% abv. Ink black with a small brown head that disappears quickly. Roasted malt and strong bourbon aroma with creamy dark chocolate, oak, vanilla, raisins, mocha, toffee, bit syrupy, some liquorice, more bourbon and wood in the finish. Flavour is sweet with a mild bitterness and warming booze. Body is full and thick. mouthfeel a bit sticky. Great balance and smoothness, heavy on the bourbon but no sign of sharpness. The definition of fabulous barrel aging.

It pours thickish like a true imperial stout and has the smooth velvety sip as a smooth beer and then the kick of bourbon hits your throat and then the other flavors smack you like a high roller at a strip club and then the smoothness works down your throat and then the alcohol content hits you like your drunk hitting on a dudes wife ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Was pleasantly surprised to find a lone bottle hiding out in my local Whole Foods wannabe market. It pours a luxurious velvet brown black with a medium head that sticks around a bit. The aroma is some strong alcohol, berries, mocha, and toffee. The taste is, as my "garbage water" stout skeptic better half stated, like some great whiskey was dropped in the worlds best stout ever; it has a warming alcohol feel that is well balanced with an almost fruity red wine like body and a typically strong choco coffee stout base. It lives up to the lofty rep for the most part and deserves to be savored (can't imagine chugging this and doing too well). Good for an evening of paper editing, resin mining, and European train cam streaming.

2017 bottle (Slowbeer). Black, a tan head doesn't hang about. 3+ Bready, booze-soaked but not quite hot aroma akin to liquor marzipan stollen - dried fruit, mild spices, vanilla, sugar. There's a little roast malt and coffee there too, but you have to squint. Full bodied [edit - but well short of syrupy], lowish carbonation. Sweet with a bitter finish. There's no naked alcohol although there's a big warming burst at the end that's skimpily attired. There's more of a stout presence than suggested by the aroma although the Bourbon is more than prominent. Bread, medium roasted fruit coffee, some dried fruit. Bitterness is discreet but freshens things up nicely. Great beer. I guess I like more stout than barrel than this and it surely doesn't need to be 14% ABV, but it does what it does beautifully.
