At Goose Island our brewers take every opportunity to experiment with new ingredients and aging techniques. For this edition of Bourbon County Brand Stout, they aged the classic recipe in rye whiskey barrels with raspberries and blackberries from Michigan. The result is a powerfully rich beer with notes of tart fruit and jam that fade into the warm spice of a fine rye whiskey.

Bottle @ the Epic Bourbon County Tasting. Pours a pitch black beer with a very small beige head on top. Aroma has sweet malts, fruits, bourbon touches and an overwhelming sweet fruity presence. Flavor has bourbon notes, loads of very sweet red fruits and the sweetness is very overwhelming, almost too much. Its so sweet, that its hard to get the sweetness. Its like drinking unblended fruit juicy with chocolate sauce drizzled over it. Very sweet and fruity..

Bottle sampled at the De Molen Bourbon County Tasting. Pours near black with a ring beige head. Aroma of big jammy berries, red and black fruits, light chocolate, bourbon characters below. Flavour is light heavy sweet. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Good, but certainly doesnt improve on the base.

Sample at the Bourbon County tasting, De Molen. Poured a deep mahogany. The aroma is rich fruit, roasty malt, tart, yeast, red berry fruit. The flavour is light sour, light sweet with a light malt, molasses yeast, over ripe fruit palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Very nice blackberry and raspberry smell. Taste is tart berries with a touch of juicy sweetness mixed with a very solid chocolatey stout. Delicious. Body is smooth and medium to thick with light carbonation.

Bottle: Thanks to Beerlistman: Vintage 2011: Served in Chouffe glass: Black beer with a lively brown head. Aroma is a beautiful mix of raspberries, whiskey, molasses, some berries, rye and roast. Beautiful! Flavour of raspberries, whiskey, roast, berries, liquorice, malt roast, bitters, wood, some yeast, wood roast and sweets. Aftertaste has some dark fruits, strange bitterness, some whiskey, wood burn and sweets. Low carbo, creamy close to silky mouthfeel, close to full bodied. Delicious stuff!

A little odd - a strange mash taste to this and blackberries have a pretty big presence. Pours black without much head or lacing. Definitely the least superior of the Bourbon County series. Finishes with light sourness. Thanks to someone at Churchkeys 5th anniversary for giving away a taste of this. Bottle pour.

Bottle sample @ CK. deep soupy brown with a small head. Nose is definitely faded and showing its age. Cardboard and overripe apples. Plum and cherry meat. Taste is better. Very jammy fruits. Cherry and plum. Chocolate. Pretty rich and viscous. On its last legs, but still has some charm.

"I dont know if I can write accurately about the awesomeness that was this beer. There are good beers, great beers, beers so good you have to share, and then ocassionally, beers SO good, you want to hoard them all to yourself. I didnt do that, but I milked my quarter bomber for all it was worth and was very sad to see it go. I returned my nose to the bottle a few times throughout the night as well. I was looking forward to the rye presence in the beer, but a little apprehensive about the fruit in addition to the different barrels. My worries were baseless. Perfect balance in both the complex aroma and complex flavor of raspberries and blackberries, slightly sweet and ever so slightly tart, spicy rye and whiskey, and vanilla, chocolate, roast, and a hint of coffee from the stout. This beer was amazing in every way. Sad that its such a pain in the arse to get, but damn Im glad I got this one, and I hope they make this again. Rivals the far more expensive BCS Rare as the best in the line."
