Tasted on 1/4/12 on draft at the Clybourn Brewpub. Pours completely opaque nearly black with a thin tan head that leaves a decent collar. The nose is a very pleasant blend of whiskey vanilla, caramel, and oak, with dark chocolate and coffee undertones. The flavor is slightly tart and astringent coffee, with the whiskey vanilla, caramel, oak, and dark chocolate taking a back seat. [Tap] Opaque black pour without much head on top. Aroma of roasted malts, vanilla and light booze. Roasted malty taste is a little on the astringent side. Ash, bitter chocolate, vanilla, bourbon and tobacco. Alcohol becoming more noticeable in the finish. Seems a little thin for the barrel treatment. Wish it was a bit more balanced as well. Pour on tap, dark black pour with thin tan head, aroma brought notes of roast, chocolate, slight oak and vanilla in there, hints of coconut in there, bourbon, touch of dark sugars, touch of dark fruits in there as well. Multiple samples at GABF. Nice dark brown pour, brown head. Aroma has great medium barrel notes, tahitian vanilla, dr pepper, toffee, plums, chocolate. Flavor is sweet with just enough roast and a nice dose of the sweet bourbon from the barrel. Charred wood and some asphalt. Really good stuff.

Sampled with Andrew and Moreau at GABF 2012. It was almost unfair to try this after the XOCHOLATE (whatever) beer. It’s essentially a tamer version with most of the same notes (chocolate, bourbon, light vanilla, oak) toned down much more. Lighter body, not as syrupy with some slightly roastier tones coming through. Sampled at GI Cly. A dark black with a thin head. Lots of bourbon in the nose. Coffee chocolate essence and something that’s kind of odd all overpowered by that booze. December 28, 2011 tap at Clybourn. Opaque black with almost no head. Aroma was bourbon, chocolate and hint of vanilla. Taste was a bit of let down, but similar to aroma. Slight carbonation and medium bodied.
