COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel Aged Barleywine. 11% ABV, 60 IBUs. Loosely based off our 2000th brew at our production facility,we revived this hybrid American / English Barley Wine for a special treat. Coming out of the tanks we aged it in barrels previously used for Bourbon County Rare Stout (Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year) to add another layer of complexity.

Note: The original release of this beer (2010) was done in regular bourbon barrels. The 2011 and bottle release saw the use of the barrels formerly used for Bourbon County Rare. We are not seperating these as I do not believe the bottles will clarify this. The original release also saw an 11% ABV, with the bottling seeing closer to 13.4%

Thanks Dave! Bomber bottle. This is great! Very well balanced nose and flavors of chocolates, Burbons, sweet malts. Clean finish. Very well made. It is hard to describe how good this beer is. Rich and strong and well balanced of all the best flavors I love!

THE Barleywine tasting. Thanks very much Bruce for this monster. Slightly haze on this darkish amber beer. Little tan head. Smooth palate, slightly dry. Touch of vanilla and toasted coconut. Lots of smooth bourbon - well integrated. Underneath is a lovely rich toffee malt. Semi dry finish. About what you would expect from a BA Barleywine but somehow superior in every aspect. Very drinkable.

Bottle 22fl.oz. @ The Danish Summer Gathering, TFODRBSG12, Ulfborg.

Clear medium to dark brown colour with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, chocolate, wood, licorice - laber laver, bourbon, dried fruit, vanilla notes. Flavour is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, dark berries - fruit, raisin, prune, bourbon, chocolate. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. [20120818]

Bomber. Brown with a creamy mocha ring. Very sweet, burnt brown sugar, lots of caramel and booze, did not find this balanced in terms of aroma - although interesting I wonder if I should have tried it earlier (although I didnt really have a chance) - still good on the snoof but maybe my expectations had just built up too much. Low to moderate carbonation, full body, very sweet, lots of caramel, more booze, apple notes in a bad way - sorta like an overripe apple juice box left on the radiator - lots of toffee, velvet on the palate but a little syrupy on the finish. Worth trying but not worth paying a ransom for.

Bottle @ THE Barley Wine Tasting. Cheers deeblo. Pours deep brown with a tiny tan head. The aromas big bouncy caramel, vanilla, boozy wood and bourbon. Some sugar-fortified cherry and plum. THe taste is thick caramel, plenty of spiced fruit cake .Notes of chocolate-covered cherry. Mild booze-soaked wood and accents of vanilla. A shock of cocoa powder on the long finish. Substantial body, viscous. Very smooth for a 13.4% beer. Though lightly boozy, the alcohols obscured well. I finished my sample with little trouble. Overall, a great barley wine. Not a revelation for me, but I can see why people like this so much. This was the best barley wine I tried at the tasting. Very good.

Bottle shared by a friend for my birthday celebration. Clear brown pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, toffee, vanilla and light chocolate. Caramel and bourbon flavor with toffee and light chocolate before a vanilla and booze finish. Outstanding stuff.

Bottle shared by Mike. Thanks! Pours a ruddy brownish color with little head. Aroma is sweet vanilla, barrel, booze, and some grain. Heavy mouthfeel. Tastes like it smells. Its just really sweet. If I had to guess this could be Dark Lords cousin its so sweet. So time should do this beer some good.

Small yellow-rusty head over russet-brown, opaque beer. Very rich nose with brandy, fusels, nutbread, sweet soft cheese, dried fruit as figs. Extremely complex, yet balanced and enticingly inviting. Bitter-sweet-sparkling-viscous. Impossibly good, this is everything apart and perfectly balanced at the same time. Bit of cigarleaf, bit of chocolate, bit of spineach, bit of (blue) cheese, bit of figs, dates, dried plums and apricots, pinch of grapefruit and ginger. Good example of umami as well - the mineral compound upon the sweetness. Lots of alcohol, torrent of fusels - yet clean. Finish with vanilla and young oakwood. Warming gives it a slight metallic tang, though. Rich, velvety-viscous and sparkling at the same time, without having any heavy impression. All former flavours lingering on. Insane masterpiece. Possibly the best barley wine Ive ever sampled.

UPDATED: SEP 4, 2012 Bottle, thanks to Bruce at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours cloudy deep brown, with a thin beige film. The nose is toasted coconut, vanilla, caramel, touch of beef gravy, chocolate caramel, bourbon and toffee. The taste is caramel, wood, bourbon, raisin, prune, brown sugar, slight tanginess, medicinal notes, chewy toffee and treacle, with a sweet finish. Full body, slow carbonation and sticky mouth-feel . Hides the alcohol well. Smooth, well balanced and approachable. Cleary stood out as one of the best of the night.

Bottle shared by some guy at the campfire. Pours a deep copper color with a smallish off white head that dissipates quickly. Wow that smells great. Lots of caramel and brown sugar with some dark fruits like plums and cherries, a bit of oak and bourbon mixed with some oak tannins and a nice shot of ethanol. The flavor is what I expected based on the aroma. Sweet malty caramel and brown sugar, mixed with a fair amount of dark fruits, countered with ethanol and oak. Thick body with a warm sweet syrupy mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation. Very nice barleywine I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I can taste a slight hint of hype in it.
