This one is good. A nice hoppy stout with a lot of fruit flavor that you don’t normally get from this style. Dogbrick (13518) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - NOV 16, 2012
Sample at the Clybourn brewpub. This Stout pours Black with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee, anise and malt. Medium body with a roasty character and flavors of coffee, licorice, malt and hops. The finish is mildly bitter with a roast coffee aftertaste. Pretty good overall. Flight on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a murky blackish pour, brownish murky edges with a big cakey tannish brown head that dies to a small layer, laces a-ok overall. Aromas are coffee roast, creamy stout sweetness and dryness combine, some soda bread, dry hoppy florals and flourishes of pine. Some bakers chocolate, roast, and just a touch of sweet caramel and toffee coming through. Initial is medium bodied, giving a nice roast up front, touch more bitterness. With cocoa, touches of toffee, with some roasty coffee and roasted malts bringing some bitterness into the fold. Hops strengthen that with florals and grass, touches of pine grow on the palate. Sweetness comes in up front further in with cocoa and caramel, toffee, biscuits. A solid bitter slanted stout on the backend. An improvement over the original I think. Very worth the different entry and a great recipe change. Marheb (5981) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 26, 2012
À la pompe au pub: Totalement noir avec une tête mocha foncé bien en place. Présence en bouche très sexy avec ses courants fruités, torréfiés et rôtis. Forte personnalité.

Super tobacco beer. Weird because the smokiness of the beer is more musty than you would expect. Has a nice amount of chocolate malts and a pleasant and fairly balanced hop edge... tried with Nick and his friend at the brewery in 2012. tmoreau (4579) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - MAR 5, 2012
On tap at the Wrigleyville brewpub, and snifter served with a dark, black/brown hue, a persistent, tan froth to the head, and equally frothy and wavey lacing. The aroma was medium roast, with primarily cocoa notes, and some lesser coffee presence. Caramel and molasses sweetness, and some light creaminess were also noticed and appreciated. Ditto on the flavor, including a medium hop bitterness that presented a lingering, woody/resiny astringency, a medium to full body, and a bit more liveliness to the carbonation than I prefer in a hefty Stout. A decently quaffable brew nonetheless. drewbeerme (3920) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 19, 2011
Draft, pours black with creamy tan head. Nose is nice and piney, big citrus juice kick, and coffee. Flavors are really piney, sweet and bitter chocolate, with raisins. chewy feel. Nice big hoppy stout. chibuck (3513) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 3, 2011
draft, new version... dark brown body, almost black, light tan head with great lace... boring nose a bit of grapefruit and pine on the finish... weird taste, very citrusy with lots of hops a bit of roast, this is a black ipa... rated a little lower than the original recipe NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 6, 2011
Draft at GI Clybourn, and apparently it’s a different beer, though my notes from a few years ago are eerily similar. Pours a deep brown/black. Nose is really quite subdued. Some faint citrusy hops and a floral note behind faint roast. On taste, it is really quite bitter. A strong acidity from the roasted grains and the hops couple with a somewhat aggressive astringency. An okay beer, but wouldn’t probably go back to it.
