Lively carbonation. Sweet malt, sugar, and honey on the nose with a spicy note. A smell similar to a mead almost. Taste of honey is there, but accompanied by spices, finishing slightly more fruity. Fruit is almost like fresh apricot, but with some pear thrown in. Very enjoyable. I drank Bells Hopslam right before this so my palate may be a little off.

Good, smooth, taste and smell of cloves. Something I should probably drink on thanksgiving. Very good strong beer.

2016 bottle bought in SF. Amber-brown and fizzy with little head. Nose is banana with light caramel and dry herby-spicy notes. That carries through onto the palate with a dry peppery bitterness and a nutty malt undertone. Nice.

On draft at Goose Island bar at OHare Airport. Poured dark amber with an abundant long lasting cream head. The aroma was floral hops, spice, and yeasty malt. The taste malt, hops, some sweetness and dark fruit. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with good carbonation. Nice light peppery finish.

Noooo! I should have known: always open a 5 year old bretty beer close to the sink, not in the living room! After opening the bottle I spend the next 10 minutes cleaning the floor. The little that is left of the bottle that actually ends up in my glass is cloudy and full of sediments. The body is medium amber, and the off-white head is actually not that big (most of the carbonation escaped as I opened the bottle). Funky, sweet, sour and strong aroma of tart light fruits, apple, pineapple and leather, with some caramel in the back. Strong flavour of funky yeast, acidic light fruits, grapefruit, lemon, lemon peel and grape pits, upon a background of spices and perfume. Very little sweetness and bitterness, moderate sourness. Light and very dry body, and the carbonation that initially was explosive, ends up as moderate as I drink. A fairly nice one, but I doubt that storing the beer for such a "long" time did it any good.

12 ounce bottle. Has slight sweet aroma and golden amber in color. Lightly carbonated and can taste the Belgium yeast. Little sour on the palate and above average for this style beer.

Type: 16-oz. draft Glass: Goose Island chalice From: Goose Island Pub at Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Price: $8.00 Purchased: Dec. 14, 2016 Consumed: Dec. 14, 2016 Reviewed as: Belgian Strong Pale Ale Misc.: N/A Was staying at the Hard Rock for a work trip and had planned on heading to the Goose Island Pub once I saw that BCBS was on tap. The plan was to review Sofie and Matilda, and have a BCBS. However, once I got there I was told that they ran out of BCBS in the last hour. Bummer. Still wanted to try both beers and was actually surprised that I had not yet. Poured a copper amber clear color with 1-to-2 fingers of frothy white head when I got it. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Decent wet foamy lacing. Below average retention. (Sight - 3.75) Smelled banana, pear, mandarin, range, allspice, cinnamon, sugary Belgian cloves and Circus Peanut candy. (Smell - 4.00) Tasted allspice, Belgian cloves, peppery spices, banana, pear, spicy coriander, Belgian candy, grassy notes, hints or herbal and caramel. (Taste - 3.75) Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Dry finish. (Feel - 3.75) Not as good a beer as Sofie, but glad I got to try it. (Overall - 3.75) 3.81 86 B+
