33 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via The Dram Shop. Cola-like deep brown appearance, lingering beige head. Sweet aroma of stewed raisins with some background resin. Velvety texture, thick and sweet, then a warming clove finish. Garito793 (241) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 15, 2011
A bizarre beer, and somewhat of a disappoint considering the excellence of Goose Island’s other belgians. Pour jet black. Yeasty peppercorn indeed gives it a very smoky taste though a weak aroma. Tastes MUCH lighter than it looks though. Drake (13662) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 13, 2011
Served on draft at Madison’s in Madison, WI at the GTMW pre-party. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of faint roasted malts, tart fruits and coffee. The taste is roasted malts, citrus, earthy notes and a bit of smoke, Slight tartness. Medium bodied. evergreen0199 (3323) - Northwood, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 12, 2011

Pours opaque red-black with a lovely, frothy, staying, beige head. Aroma has soft nuttiness, roasted malts, sweet milky chocolate. High carbonation, light and quite dry mouthfeel. Flavour starts a bit anonymous, turns mild roasted, some nuts, chocolate, mildsmoke and peppery coriander. Not bad, just not that spectacular either.
My first black saison beer. Poured a very deep dark brown color with a light tan 2 finger head that lasted all the way down. The aroma was yeasty with spicy berries or even a red spicy zinfandel aroma. Also some blood orange and rich reduced fruit juice smells. The taste again brings forth that Belgium spicy yeast along with coriander. The finish taste is a touch of roast malt and chocolate. Palate is a very fine carbonation that cleans the mouth. Another stunner for Goose Island brewery.
