A bizarre beer, and somewhat of a disappoint considering the excellence of Goose Islands other belgians. Pour jet black. Yeasty peppercorn indeed gives it a very smoky taste though a weak aroma. Tastes MUCH lighter than it looks though.

Served on draft at Madisons in Madison, WI at the GTMW pre-party. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of faint roasted malts, tart fruits and coffee. The taste is roasted malts, citrus, earthy notes and a bit of smoke, Slight tartness. Medium bodied.

[On-tap at DGs] Pours reddish-brown with a big, creamy, lingering beige head. Aroma has some vinegar notes, cocoa, barley--there is an aspect of it that reminds me a bit of OEP by New Glarus, but it isnt nearly as good. Taste is muddled--fairly fruity, almost reminded me of raspberry for a moment, also some chocolate, and a decent amount of alcohol. Very, very smooth, good mouthfeel, and a decent length finish. Overall, there are some nice facets to it, but it is messy and not something that I really look forward to revisiting.

Bottle, bought @ Bishops Arms,Cph.
Pours opaque red-black with a lovely, frothy, staying, beige head. Aroma has soft nuttiness, roasted malts, sweet milky chocolate. High carbonation, light and quite dry mouthfeel. Flavour starts a bit anonymous, turns mild roasted, some nuts, chocolate, mildsmoke and peppery coriander. Not bad, just not that spectacular either.

My first black saison beer. Poured a very deep dark brown color with a light tan 2 finger head that lasted all the way down. The aroma was yeasty with spicy berries or even a red spicy zinfandel aroma. Also some blood orange and rich reduced fruit juice smells. The taste again brings forth that Belgium spicy yeast along with coriander. The finish taste is a touch of roast malt and chocolate. Palate is a very fine carbonation that cleans the mouth. Another stunner for Goose Island brewery.
