Sampled from the tap at the Clyborn location. Poured a clear gold with a slight amber hue and a white head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma had a slight smokiness with some sweet grains and bread. Flavor was a bit thin but had a slight smokey note with a bit of light roasted malts. phaleslu (10271) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - APR 30, 2012
Draft in a sampler at the Clybourn brewpub. Pours a clear gold color with a small white head. The smoke is fairly mild in both aroma and flavor, along with notes of sweet malts, straw, fruits (apples, faint citrus), grass, and pepper. Seems like a good helles but the smoke is very restrained. Light-medium bodied, with a gently smoky mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - APR 15, 2012
Draft on tap at Clybourn (Chicago, IL). Was pretty excited for this and was in the city so I came right over doing a errand for the Bachelor Party with BeerSommelier. Pours a well hazed golden hue, frothy bright white head atop laces well and sticks around as a bubbly level, cakey a bit and sticks around. Aromas are straw and cereal grains, gentle fruit, and bread malts. Touches of gentle wood and smoke, crisp smoked apples and a hint of wood. Initial is lighter end of the spectrum pushing a touch of lemon and apple, gentle bready malts, pale grains, bread, and some gentle fruit qualities. A mellow smoked essence, touches of wood, some faint meat, more smoked apple. Gentle sweetness, crisp smoked apple and some bready malts, grains, and some cereal elements. Gentle, some fruit, mellow smoke. As it warms, up front gives the smokey touches, as middle and backend get sweeter, crisp. Quite drinkable. Mellow, touches of crisp dryness, sweetness, mellow smoke hits more up front. Solid, could use some more smoke in this guy’s opinion. Beerman6686 (6607) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 21, 2014
This poured a semi hazy golden color with a white head. Aroma was of cracker, grass and smoked malt. Flavor was meaty smoke and grassy character. Nice. Pailhead (6540) - Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA - NOV 14, 2014
On tap: The aroma consists of moderate smoked meats, light campfire, and a hint of honey. It’s a transparent dull gold with a small white head that quickly fades to a thin thick ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with light smoked meats and lighter campfire with a touch of honey sweetness. The finish has just a touch of grass. It’s light bodied with mild carbonation.

On tap at Goose Island Clybourn. Served in a sampler glass. Pours a clear golden color with a nice white head. Spotty lacing. Nose has a bit of smoke behind some grain and light bread. Flavor adds a lot more smoke. A bit unbalanced; could use some additional bitterness and less smoke. Body is light and crisp. Dry smoke. Not a big fan. beastiefan2k (3981) - HdG (past: NYC, KS, Rain City), Maryland, USA - SEP 2, 2013
Not sure what people want from this beer, U have had it 3 times now and its always money. Clean lager, nothing off at all and a nice medium strength smokiness on the nose. Just beautifully melded together. Flavor is mild on the smoke and again super clean. Love it. drewbeerme (3920) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 20, 2012
Draft at goose cly, pours hazy yellow gold with white head. Aroma has wet grain, smoked malt. Authentic smelling. Flavors have an initial smoke quality and it only slightly lingers throughout the experience, some honey comb malt notes pierce through, slight peppery finish. Body is a tad heavy but the feel is crisp. Pretty tasty beer. Could up the smoke a bit though but a true Hell beer is here for sure. NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 20, 2011
Draft at Clybourn. Pours a very brilliant gold with a white cap of foam. Nose is definitely lacking in the nose. There is a hint of smoke-based phenol in the nose, but otherwise a superbly clean and well rounded malt profile with some melanoidins peaking through. on taste, this is a really great beer, just not really smoked. More of the phenolic notes do come through as it warms. Very full maltiness to it and very clean and balanced. Finishes with some light hoppy notes. A really great beer, just not smokey enough. tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - NOV 19, 2014
Tap @ Goose Island: Golden-yellow body with good clarity & a thin, soapy gray-tinted ring outlining the top. Smells like when you stand by a campfire all night then sniff your clothes in the morning. Woodsy smoked tones with a semisweet pale malt underbody; hickory, just shy of meaty. Flavor starts with some pale malt & bready sweetness defined by a light touch of earthy, borderline spicy hops. Possibly Saaz? The smoked slowly makes its way in; slightly sweet with a liquid smoke character & that campfire essence coming back to life. A hint of citrus zest in the aftertaste. Pretty nice beer, but it doesn’t compare to Schlenkerla’s original smoked helles. Still good, though.
