Imperial draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a very dark brown, copper bottom, with a soapy offwhite near tan head, small layer, laces ok. Dark with a lighter bottom, a nice near opaque pour. Aromas are a light biscuity sweetness, faint toffee, vanilla, brown malts with a touch of light smoke, sweeter malts. Initial is lighter bodied, a light smokiness pervades, dark cocoa, brown malts, a nice cherrywood smoked malt, biscuits and bread dough, a very sufficient bitterness and almost roasty toastiness. Vanilla, toasty, faint smokiness, a bit of orange marmalade does peek through. This beer is highly quaffable, a decent bitterness, light sweetness, high sessionability. Cocoa, light smoke, sticky biscuits and faint cocoa and toastiness. Finish is lightly bitter, thinner, with a lingering sweetness. Very nice, truer to style than expected. More smoke would not have hurt. pantanap (3366) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 7, 2010
Tap at goose... Pours a dark amber reddish down with a thin soapy white head... Light smoked malt combines with caramel malt and grains... Pale malt, light biscuit, and the subtlest hint of smoke in the finish but barely even noticeable. Mildly sweet. Thin watery mouthfeel overall.
