An interesting beer that is supposed the strong malts of an English Pale Ale with hops of a West Coast Pale Ale. Amber in color with a decent off-white head. The aroma is strongly hoppy. The flavor is fairly good, but dominated by hops. The malts, while strongly advertised, are not very present in the flavor, thus making it a little thin. An interesting idea that didn't quite work out. BBB63 (6557) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - OCT 17, 2004
On tap (listed at 5.8% ABV this batch): Amber red with a small frothy head and good lace. The aroma has a piney, grapefruit overtone with additional bready and toasted malts, and just a hint of mild fruits (blackberry and banana). The taste starts very balanced with a grapefruit and sweet malt character leading a piney undertone upon the palate. The Cascade hops and Special B malts are very noticeable in the flavor and work nicely together. The finish is the standard bitter dry metallic. The feel is overall crisp and smooth enough not to offend. A solid APA with what you would expect from the genre. Yummy! JoeM500 (1908) - Crown Point, Indiana, USA - NOV 1, 2004
SxPxAx: Extremely dark brick red, salty sea nose, sliky smotth mouthfeel. Thin hints of caramel, big sheets of Brussels lace, fluffy and light bodied. Very refreshing. Cornfield (5570) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - MAR 21, 2005
UPDATED: JUL 26, 2005 This should be bottled. Now. It pours a bright orange red with a hefty, frothy head. The aroma is of soft sweet malts. And HOPS. Plenty of grapefruit, orange, pine, and some floral HOPS. It’s got a lively body with plenty of caramel and toffee malt flavors. And HOPS. The finish is a lingering one of bitter HOPS. draft. Enjoyed this one at the brew-pub across from Wrigley field, great color, nice malt character to balance the healthy dose of hops, oily and citrus. very nice!

On draught at clybourn. Dark orange with an off white head. Strong sweet grapefruit citrus aroma to it. Flavor was grapefruit and orange. At first I could taste the malt body, but the finish was thin. Had a nice floral hops finish to it.
Cask Conditioned: Quite a bit darker orange than the SPA with a thick off white head. The aroma was dominated by the woody tones of the cask. They masked much of the citrus notes noticable in the regular version. Flavor was malty and woody. Grapefruit and orange flavors were present, but muted and dominated by the woodiness provided by the cask. Had a bitter dry finish.
This rating is based on the SPA, not the Cask conditioned SPA. Ughsmash (7508) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - APR 22, 2006
UPDATED: APR 17, 2007 On tap at GI Clybourn. Poured a clear, medium reddish-amber with a 1/2" thick beige head. Soft grapefruit, lemongrass, and sweet malts graced the nose... very pleasant. First impression on the flavor was Alpha King (not entirely substantiated, but good nevertheless). Smooth malty middle with a big hop presence at the sides and finish... a bit too sharp and erratic with the bitter notes. Alcohol shows up toward the finish. Solid overall, but the balance was a little out of whack. 7-4-6-3-12 shp555 (2024) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - APR 27, 2007
Re-sampled 4.17.07 - aroma was juicy and well-presented.. balance was better.. really enjoyed it!
Pours a deep red color with a white head. Aroma is malty with a bitter grassy hop finish. Flavor is malty, caramel, with a bitter citrus finish. albertane (377) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, ENGLAND - APR 11, 2008
Cask at the Goose Island Tavern, Wrigleyville, Chicago. This cpper beer has a large, frothy head and a rich, chewy palate. The flavour is full and dry with a long, lingering bitterness. It was in good condition and served at the perfect temperature. sersdf (1020) - chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 16, 2006
very hoppy, but not imbalanced. a somewhat brownish red. sharp bitterness in the finish. OK overall.
