3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Clybourn. Pours a slightly hazed gold with a low dissipating head. The nose starts out grainy with a popcorn note, low Lactic acidity in the nose, lacking overall. Upon tasting, has a nice soft acidity that works well in this style. Grainy and tart, clean overall, avoiding some of those unpleasant funky notes. Does have a nice overarching fruity theme, albeit somewhat generic. Works well together. Middle of the road in terms of a Berliner/wow factor but I’m not complaining. Nice to see the attempt. Has a light strawberry note on the finish as it warms, reminding me of crunch berries? Solid stuff.
Had this at the Clybourn pub. Received in an imperial pint. 3.8% ABV.
3.5 A: Deeply hazed light orange color. Two fingers of frothy white head. Average retention and no lacing is left.
4.0 S: Cherry and strawberries abound. Musky basement with a fresh outdoorzy funk. Mildly tart.
4.0 T: Light cherry and strawberry again. Tart, tangy sourness in moderate amounts. Mountain stream earthy funkiness. Quite tasty.
4.0 M: Lighter body. Crisp, clean, and refreshing.
4.0 D: Solid Berliner. Worth a try if you are in town.

On tap at gi cly. A local Berliner, yes! Hopefully signs of things to come... Pale hazy yellow orange brown hue topped with a medium creamy milky white head that slowly retreats leaving a thin ring around the sides... Lemon and strawberry, seedy, lactic sourness upfront with a backing soft pale grain note. Pretty solid and consistent stylistically with the added fruity focus... Immediate initial flavors follow suit with lemon, essences of berry while quickly followed up by grains which add an earthy texture at the backend. Level of tartness is more than adequate. Finish could use a little bit more though. Completely refreshing and quaffable and in our backyard to boot. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - JUN 24, 2012
A couple drafts on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Clybourn with a Berliner.. That’s pretty exciting. Pours a richer golden orange hue, healthy glow and a bit dulled overall. A good lively carbonation in the glass with a cakey white head atop, sticks around firmly, laces well and cakes well. Pretty hues. Aromas are flaked wheat and a distinct lactic character, touches of stale grain, some soured grains, dry hay. Lemons, grass, and touches of yogurt. A bit funky and sour on the nose with still some grainy flaked wheat, bready malts, and pale grains. Cereal, straw. Tart and sour lemon essence grows, some grapefruit, kiss of cherry and ruby red grapefruit. Middle lactic quality, yogurt. Lemons, lingering tartness, some touches of bready malts, mellow sweetness kicks in the middle. Finish leaves a mellow tartness, crisp touch of dryness, mellow lemony sourness. Pretty nice, refreshing, if a touch girthy in the middle. Could use a touch more assertiveness on the lactic element but overall this is pretty nice, solid local interpretation. Tart and refreshing, light enough. Extra point overall for the sheer enjoyability of it to me. drewbeerme (3920) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 23, 2012

Sampled from the tap at the Clyborn location. Pours a slightly hazy pale gold with a white head that dissipates immediately and remains at the edges. Aroma has a very earthy fruit note with some grapefruit and a hint of bitterness. Flavor has that same earthy fruit note with more of a tartness that come out in the finish and earthy wheat for a backbone. Refreshing.
