Draft sample at FOBAB 2010. Pours an opaque dark brown with a small khaki head. Aroma of cocoa beans, vanilla, oak, bourbon, and lactose. The flavor follows closely, with a lot of dark chocolate, barrel notes, and milk sugar. Very mellow and balanced. Medium-full bodied, with a slick, oily mouthfeel and low carbonation. Awesome sweet stout. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - NOV 14, 2011
Sampled on tap at FoBAB 2011 (Chicago, IL). Pours a roasty blackish pour, a nice roasty pour with thicker toffee pour, frothy and laces well. Aromas are touches of mint and roast, bourbon and toffee, vanilla. Initial is minty and touches of sweet cocoa, gentle roast, oak, vanilla. Middle shows some sweetness of toffee, vanilla, roast, and oak. Finish is a touch of cool mint, roast, and sweetness. Cocoa grows, nice finish. Missed this last year, glad I got another shot at it. FoBAB 2010, my 2nd brew of the day: Opaque with a good beige head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, toast, caramel, oak, vanilla, leather, and a hint of black pepper. A bit of bourbony vapours start to finish, a tad stinging. The taste has a smooth and sweet overtone of lush chocolate and roasted malts with vanilla and walnut character. Much like the nose, there is a constant bourbon barrel note but more complementary than overpowering, nice. The mouth feel is surprisingly chewy and smooth, more body than expected in a BB Aged stout. Mikey Likey this a lot. Thorpe429 (5035) - , Illinois, USA - APR 21, 2011
On tap at the Clybourn location. Was excited to see this Gold Medal winner.
Poured near-black with a really nice dark tan head. A few spots of lacing on the glass as well as a fairly-thick collar as the brew went down. The nose was really fantastic with a good dose of bourbon and chocolate as well as some vanilla meandering in the background. The bourbon character from the Elijah Craig is quite excellent. The taste doesn’t hold back with really strong bourbon and chocolate notes, blended expertly in this brew without any real heat. Mouthfeel is fairly heavy and really smooth. Whatever booze is there fits in really well. Drinks really well. Very, very glad I was able to sample this. In Chicago at the right time.

Sampled at FoBAB 2010. Black pour with tan head. Nice aroma of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, some cookie. Flavor of bourbon with a light lactose tinge, some chocolate, some vanilla, very smooth and nice. Roasty malt and some nuttiness. Maybe a touch of earthiness? Overall, impressive.

(draft @ Goose Island Clybourne - Chicago, IL) Dark black pour with a thin tan head. A lot more raw bourbon in the aroma in this one but has some of the sweetness from the stout coming through with the roasted malts and oak. Smooth and sweet with a nice bourbon and vanilla combination mixing with the roastiness of the stout. Very nice and thick. Man did we have a lot of bourbon beers this trip. chibuck (3513) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 13, 2011
draft... popular beer that’s a judges favorite that’s just ok to me, too sweet and thin, needs a bigger base NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 16, 2011
Draft at FoBAB 9. Pours black with a brown head. Nose is pretty nice. Light notes of coconut and vanilla, perhaps marshmallow. Strong roast component as well. Minimal hops or fruitiness. On tasting, it is round and full, lending a lot of chocolatey notes and roast. The oats fill up the palate as well. Creamy and fresh, only detraction is that the barrel character seems generic. Solid beer. pantanap (3366) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 23, 2010
first sampled at FOBAB 2010 and then a snifter at GI Clybourn....poured a darker carame cola brown with lighter edges and topped with a thin light beige head that is quick to dissipate... bourbon-forward nose with a decent vanilla backing. sweet and chocolatey while taking a backseat to the barrel...flavor is again bourbon barrel forward but not awkwardly so. additional hints of sweetness and vanilla meshes well altogether. Thin to medium bodied with prickly carbonation and a lasting sweet finish. pretty solid all-around. wedgie9 (2702) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - NOV 19, 2010
Tasted on draft at the Clybourn Brewpub. The pour is nearly black with an average beige head that leaves spotty lace. The nose is oak and bourbon with vanilla, coconut, and dark malt. The flavor is lactose, cola, caramel, vanilla, bourbon, and oak. The body is medium with lively carbonation and a long bourbon and cola finish.
