On tap at Clybourn. Pours a thick black with a thin head. Good rich notes of coffee, bakers chocolate, creaminess, and a touch of vanilla sweetness in the aroma. Medium to thick syruppy body. Aging a oatmeal stout should make a pretty sweet beer, and this one is sweet, but not the sweet mess you might expect. Creamy baker’s chocolate is the most forward flavor. But some coffee, vanilla, and bourbon around the edges. I had to check twice to make sure this wasn’t a bourbon county stout base beer because there are a lot of similar notes. My guess is that the malt bill is mostly BCS with oats added. Good stuff.

Draft at Clybourn. Pours black with a thin brown head that vanishes. Inky. The nose presents with loads of dark fruit, prunes and alcohol. Some strong floral esters as well. Hops are well hidden. Dark malt and licorice. On tasting, it is sweet and lots of dried fruit and fig. licorice and chocolate come through late. Quite bitter and balanced overall. I actually found this very drinkable. Some alcohol warming. Creamy body. Pretty nice stuff, really.

Sampler Flight pour on tap at the Clybourn brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a deeper black opaque pour, dark and rich, some mellow touches of brownish glow on the edges. A frothy mellow layer of tannish head stays firm, laces well. Aromas are deeper dark black malts, cocoa and caramel, gentle dryness with a gentle lactose sweetness. Cocoa, coffee elements, and gentle sweetness. Deep and dark yet inviting. Lactose element grows as it warms. Initial is fuller bodied, offering sweetness, black malts, caramel, and chocolate. Milk sugars, milk chocolate and coffee elements a bit sweetened as we move into the middle. Thicker up front, the beer loses body as we move back. Some cocoa, gentle ABV related heat into the backend. Vanilla, more coffee and cocoa, touches of cola, dryness, and alcohol related elements back there. Finish is dry, toasty, a touch of thickness from the malt profile. Lingering coffee, cocoa, and gentle lactose touches. Darker and a touch roasty at times, the sweeter elements give it some soft landing like feel.

Draft, pours jet black with small tan head around the rim. Aroma is roasty, caramel, nutty, vanilla, touch soy, with cocoa. Flavors are sweet cocoa, vanilla, nutty, oats, and licorice. Thick syrupy body. Rather sweet. The final gravity has to be really high. This is perfect barrel aging material, it sorta reminds me of BCS Pre-barreled but that’s probably just cuz I’m at goose. Enjoyed in a small sample as it is pretty sweet but there’s enough going on to keep me sippin’. Nice for such a good day.

On tap at the Goose Island Clybourn location. Has some sweet coffee aromas. Taste is sweet chocolate, but a little cloyingly sweet.

Sampled from the tap at the Clyborn location. Pours a clear near black with a dark brown head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has notes of vanilla and sweet dark grains with hints of alcohol and coffee. Flavor starts with sweet dark grains but finish is pretty boozy with some coffee underlying.
