FoBAB 11’- Was expecting to like this beer more than I did, that said, it’s solid, pours a dark black to brown, nose and taste are of spices, coco nibs, caramel. Very sweet and a touch spicy. A good beer but I had thought it was going to be special and I did not find this to be. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - JAN 3, 2012
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Missed this at FoBAB, excited to see it on. Pours a fairly brownish pour, some lighter glowing essence, but largely opaque and darker. A decent frothy tannish head dies to a smaller ring, laces small. Aromas are tons of cocoa, a load of dark cocoa, bakers chocolate, and some sweeter milk chocolate. Toffee, biscuits, mellow oaky vanilla and spirit barrel. Touches of coconut, more oak, spirit, and vanilla. Initial is a rich flavors and medium bodied, offering healthy caramel and toffee, mixing with a deep dark cocoa regime, some milk chocolate, bakers cocoa. Sweet up front, dying out in the middle. Barrel offers Bourbon spirit, heat, a good dose of vanilla. Some gentle peppery spice moves into the fold in the backend. Chiles are mild, yet growing, synergy with the ABV element. Dry, inviting, with a lot of sweet heavier body ahead of it. Nice beer. Mellow spice, healthy tannins, heat from spirit and peppers. Lots of dark cocoa, mellow sweetness lingers. A good and interesting beer. Lovely barrel aged barleywine with some good elements to add complexity. drewbeerme (3921) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 17, 2011

Interesting beer - spiced chocolate Barleywine? FoBAB 2011. Pours amber. Aroma of chocolate with just a touch of spice. Decent flavor, light spice. Okay beer. MrChopin (4305) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - NOV 22, 2011
FoBAB 9. Tepid, translucent chestnut, no head, no life. Woody nose is light pepper, rather green in the spices and pukey(?), very sweet with considerably too much vanilla. Flavor even sweeter, vanilla sweetness nearing wort levels here save for the light pepper and wood. Thin and hot, my tongue is battered with each 2/5 oz sip. This winning shows how far behind most beer-drinkers still are.

On tap at Fobab 9. Pours clear brown with tan head. Aromas of chocolate, toffee, and spices. Flavors of chocolate, spices, and toffee sweetness. Lacking some carbonation and chocolate and spices kind of threw me off a little. Didn’t really care for this one. tmoreau (4739) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - NOV 19, 2011
A popular pour at my Category 8 serving station for FOWBAB 2011, so a few tastings in between were inevitable. Dispensed to my sampler with a hazed, dark brown hue, modest, light tan ring of foam, and some light spots of lacing. The nose was mainly rich chocolate notes with a supporting cast of light spice, a hint of whisky cask wood, and a little vanilla bean. The flavor added to these some low bitterness and low carbonation in a medium+ body. A very tasty, dessert brew. deyholla (12582) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 18, 2011
Sampled from the tap at 2011 FOBAB. Poured a near clear deep brownish amber with a light brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was full of chocolate with a hint of spice and barrel, but mainly chocolate. Flavor was similarly chocolatey with a bit of spice coming out but not much else. Nice and smooth on the tongue. fobab 11’ - tried after it won some kind of medal. bready, doughy caramel, with a touch of boozy grahamcracker whiskey barrel and vanilla. whatever spice character seemed muddled. somewhat earthy. okay. not bad, but of all the awesome beers that i tried from goose island on this day, this was probably like my 14th favorite. Draft at FoBAB 9. Pretty damn cool beer here. Pours a deep bronze with haze and a cap of foam. Nose is intriguing. Blend of wood, smokey pepper notes, fruity and cocoa. Really curious. Light sweet notes in the nose as well. On tasting, it is moderately sweet. Some of the pepper notes warm you up as you drink it. Cocoa and cinnamon shows up. Pretty well integrated and much earthier than expected. Really nice beer.
