FoBAB 9. Tepid, translucent chestnut, no head, no life. Woody nose is light pepper, rather green in the spices and pukey(?), very sweet with considerably too much vanilla. Flavor even sweeter, vanilla sweetness nearing wort levels here save for the light pepper and wood. Thin and hot, my tongue is battered with each 2/5 oz sip. draft... muddy light brown, wish it was a bit darker as this color is off... the aroma is fantastic, totally nails chocolate as its bursting with cocoa, lightly bitter but buttery sweet mostly, I don’t get any spice or bourbon... the chocolate is all over the taste as well, but too much for me too strong, the barrel needed to come through more to break it up... solid and worth trying NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 16, 2011
Draft at FoBAB 9. Pretty damn cool beer here. Pours a deep bronze with haze and a cap of foam. Nose is intriguing. Blend of wood, smokey pepper notes, fruity and cocoa. Really curious. Light sweet notes in the nose as well. On tasting, it is moderately sweet. Some of the pepper notes warm you up as you drink it. Cocoa and cinnamon shows up. UPDATED: JAN 1, 2012 Goose Island Xocolate sampled at FOBAB 2011 and again a the brewpub to ring in the new year... Pours a semi dull yet transparent muddled reddish brown hue and topped with a soapy white head, quickly dissipating... Honey raisin and toffee notes, very rich with chocolate fudge smoothening things out. An added layer of subtle yet noticeable peppery spice adds nuance... English barleywine flavor profile with an equallizing chocolate note and sweeter vanilla toffee presence. Body is somewhat thick but carbonation lightens it. Not bad especially when a modicum of heat creeps in late and lingers on for a bit. Better than when I had it at fobab as the complexities are a bit mire apparent when a bigger sample is had. Chile pepper spice always tickles my fancy so be that as it may, well I forgot where I was going with that.

fobab 11’ - tried after it won some kind of medal. bready, doughy caramel, with a touch of boozy grahamcracker whiskey barrel and vanilla. whatever spice character seemed muddled. somewhat earthy. okay. not bad, but of all the awesome beers that i tried from goose island on this day, this was probably like my 14th favorite. msante79 (2225) - Mount Prospect, Illinois, USA - NOV 19, 2011
On tap at Fobab 9. Pours clear brown with tan head. Aromas of chocolate, toffee, and spices. Flavors of chocolate, spices, and toffee sweetness. FOBAB 2011. This is part of my discovery of old ratings. I guess I got a little behind over the years. Red brown in color with no head. Rich red caramels brown sugar sweet. Sweet medium body. Nice cocoa in with the barleywine. Sweet pretty solid. 8/3/8/3/15 I remember this won gold or silver. I don’t think it was that great, but good stuff. Missed this rating at FoBaB 2012. Probably the favorite of the event. This pours out a dark murky brown with a thin tan head. Smells like chocolate, mole, oak, nutmeg and dark fruits. Taste is similar and quite smooth. Well balanced and enjoyable. Going to have to get this when it comes out (now).
