Blonde Bock
Bock beers are represented by a male goat, which in German lore symbolizes strength and virility. In accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law of 1516), bock beers must have a pre-fermentation malt sugar concentration of 16%, which converts over to at least 7% alcohol after fermentation. These strong beers were made popular in the early 1600’s by monks in order to minimize their hunger during fasting periods. While most bocks are dark, Blonde Bock is golden-colored and malty with a rich, creamy head. The rich flavor is counterbalanced with just the right level of bitterness from the Hallertau aroma hops and create a very smooth profile.

From tap in Pasadena. Pours clear and golden orange with a lacing white head. Mild hops and biscuit malty aroma. Flavour is light metallic, alcohol dense and also hoppy. Ends dry and warming alcoholic.

Draft at the Pasadena location. A dark golden beer with a thin white head. THe aroma is sweet and very malty combined with notes of caramel. The flavor very sweet and malty again with notes of caramel, but also alcohol, leading to a dry alcoholic finish. Too simple for a bock.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2004 Sampled draught at Gordon Biersch, Burbank.
Clear golden. Disturbingly neutral aroma. Sweet and reasonably malty. There’s a vague hint of the dense, near dusty malt character that I find so attractive in the best pale bocks. This is very light flavourwise.

Clean aroma of hop and fruit. Also a bit like mineral spirits. Light orange gold color, and a white head that dissipated. Actually does seem to be a bit of apple as the liquid approaches the mouth. Medium mouthfeel. A bit creamy, low carbonation. Thins a bit as apple? and malt develop. Followed by some heavy alcohol effect, if not taste, and more sweetness. The finish is fairly dry, and the bitter is faintly reminiscent of pilsener hop. But the sweet malt lingers in the corners. Maybe this is balanced. Certainly the start is "rich, malty".

Sweetish flavor with malt, bready, a bit caramelly, a bit honey-ish, with a slightly drier finish with a bitterish hint and a faint alcoholic note. Light to medium-bodied.
