Märzen (Mayrt-zen) was historically brewed in Bavaria from March through the end of October. It was brewed dark and strong, using dark roasted Munich and caramelized Munich malt to help cover up flavor changes from the lack of refrigeration (ice in those days) used to keep the beers cold in the cellars during the warm summer months. It was also the beer served at the Original Oktoberfest celebration, which originated as a wedding reception for the King Ludwig I and Maria Theresa. Bavaria was a very poor country and had little cause for celebration, so the King and Queen invited the entire population of Bavaria to the reception. They showed up that year and every year thereafter, and the event evolved into the modern day Oktoberfest. Gordon Biersch Märzen accentuates the flavors of the dark roasted imported malted barley and exhibits a caramel malt aftertaste, while downplaying the hop level.

Dark orange pour, with a medium fluffy head. Intrigued by the color, I got close to sniff...got some sweet, some nutty, VERY malty smell. Taste was still malty and slightly sweet, but had a bigger hoppy finish. Not as creamy as other marzens I’ve tried. I liked the Blonde Bock better, but the Marzen was still good.

Draught from GB’s in Xin Yi. Aroma: cherries, tobacco, caramel, it smells delicious. Appearance: medium brown, opaque with minimal head. Palate: full bodied, quite a thick texture, average carbonation, a complex and satisfying, tasty finish. Taste: sweet, predominently caramel, plus lightly bitter. Well-balanced, I really enjoyed it.

Sample on tap @ the brew house restaurant in Baltimore, MD. Pours a deep rusty orange with a thin white ring. Not much aroma but big on flavor. Nice caramel malty taste. Pretty enjoyable.

From a bottle into a Free State beer glass. Pours amber with small head and lace. Aroma of roasty malts, caramel, grains. Significant carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of rich malts, grains, straw hops, rye, minerals, copper oxide. Overall rich, flavorful but with a slight metallic finish.

On tap at Gordon Biersch. Pours a clear deep amber with a tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has sweet grains and sweet bread with a touch of caramel. Flavor is similar with sweet grains, caramel and a bit of sweet bread.

12oz bottle on my daughters patio, 21st May 2016. Autumnal orange in colour, large off-white head. Malty molasses rule the nose and flavour of this sweet tasting brew. Decent enough even if it is on the sweet side of things.

5.8%ABV. Märzen. Tapped out deep amber. 18ºSRM. Nose has some sweet, alcoholic, phenolic aromas. Beery and just happy with the promise of a proper Munic welcome. There is some fresh nut aroma in the nose as well. Very very welcoming. Mouthfeel is soapy., Palate has ample roasted malt with dark wheat toast, caramel, toasted almonds and hazelnuts. Some raw walnut body, especially in the tail end of the palate. No hops. The finish is so very very pleasant and very smooth. For an airport tap, this was likely one of my more memorable experiences! Why? It had a full-bodied malty backbone, some clean bitter hops and enough alcohol to round off the entire palate with some faint stone fruit sweetness and fruitiness, Goes on Favorites List!

Tap @ Gordon Biersch, Taipei. Bright orange, reasonable head. Mild spicy toffee malt aroma. Big sweet malty flavour. Smooth with boiled sweet aftertaste. Too sweet & sickly for me.
