Draught. Head is light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, dark chocolate, coffee), with a note of mineral/stone. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Easily the best Gordon Biersch creation I’ve had. AirForceHops (7820) - Epping, New Hampshire, USA - JUL 20, 2013
Draft sample @Syracuse location. Dark brown with thick head even in the sample glass. Nose is roast, hint of coffee and chocolate. Really nice roasted malts with the afore mentioned chocolate and coffee hints, finally a really nice brew at this place. Strykzone (7659) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - JUL 31, 2009
By far the darkest colored beer on tap at the Las Vegas brewpub. It was quite dark with lots of red highlights. A small almost white head. Very nice richly malted flavor is roasted. Some light smoke. Their boldest beer and one of their better ones. CaptainCougar (7634) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - DEC 6, 2009
On tap at the Rockville location: Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a clingy-lacing froth of off-white head. Aroma of lightly sweet toasty dark caramel and roasted malt and earthy hops. Starts with a creamy fullness and some semi-sweet roasty dark malt with decent German hop balance before a bittersweet finish with some lingering roastiness. A pretty decent Schwarzbier. Nose: Lighter nose , creamy malty feel with darker roasted accents.
Flavor/Palate : Medium bodied. Soft textured , mild brew with gentle dark roasted character.
Draft, cola colored pour. Decent roasty flavor, lightered bodied, decent schwarzbier kramer (6905) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 19, 2006
On tap, DC location, 2006 RBSG pubcrawl. Pours a dark brown, similar to cola, under a small fizzy off-white head. Aroma is roasty with a little chocolate malt and light coffee. Flavor is nicely chocolaty and dry with a little coffee on the finish. Mouthfeel is fairly thin with a watery fizzy texture. A pretty good Schwarzbier, dry and crisp flavor and refreshingly light. A very good choice for a steaming hot summer day. RobertDale (6856) - Lansing, Kansas, USA - NOV 7, 2011
Sample at Atlanta. Comes almost black with small tan head. Aroma of coffee and malt. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Decent. Braudog (6837) - Yorktown, Virginia, USA - MAY 6, 2006
Draft at the Washington DC brewpub, 5/5/06: Pitch black (duh). Almost a stouty roastiness with a bit of a tart side. Good. ben4321 (6739) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - MAY 14, 2009
Location: We have a bunch of these in the metro DC area, I think I’ve prob been to 3 of them, including the one in "Downtown Rockville" that I visit pretty often, I’ve had this one on tap there
It’s an interesting beer to me, depends on my mood how much I like this one. It is successful at being a Schwartz, but it’s pretty thin even for the style, some decent flavors sometimes, but sometimes it strikes me as a bore...We’ll split the difference here.
