WinterBock is a strong, dark beer that was used by eleventh century Bavarian monks to help sustain themselves during winter fasts. These creamy bocks ensured that the monks would fast frequently. Gordon Biersch WinterBock is a classic dark double bock featuring 4 different types of malt: Munich malt, pilsner malt, dark roasted caramel malt, and black malt. This is a big beer with a lot of body, and is available seasonally from November through January.

{thoughts} Great balance; highly drinkable for a bigger beer with deeply malty qualities.

{elements} Medium brown hue with mahogany highlights; tall, khaki head. Shy but clean nose of toffee, bananas and sweetened coffee with cream. Firm fruity and caramel sweetness, moderate dark fruit and carbonic acidity, just enough bitterness to keep things going. Creamy texture, champagne-like carbonation, medium-full bodied. Draft.

On tap at the Tysons location, pours a hazy amber with some thin, white head. Nose has grist, yeast, malt, some mild raisin. Flavor is the same, some soggy bread, yeast, a little caramel, some raisin. Watery finish.

(En ft Gordon Biersch Mission Valley San Diego): Une caramlisation muscle et fruite qui reoit avec tact un lger fizz qui transporte une chaleur supportable. Poivr, lgrement fum et gnreusement minral. Belle et enveloppante bte.

Bottle in LA. Strong malt character and big sherry-like plummy flavour, without being boozy like so many doppelbocks are. Very drinkable. A nice easy drinking doppelbock.

On Tap at Gordon Biersch in Columbus OH. Gordon Biersch Winter Bock is a darker red brown clear beer with an inch of fluffy tan foam. Nose is caramel, brown sugar, and toasted malt. Taste is initially a bit sweet playing well with the brown sugar notes that persist. Medium malt body with very light herbal hops. a nice winter warmer to be sure.

[on tap at Gordon Biersch, DTW airport] Aroma is nutty, biscuity malt with low noble hops in the background. Clear chestnut appearance under a persistent tawny, off-white sheet. Sweet, complex cereal grain malt flavour that quickly dries out and becomes a bit ethanolic. Moderate bitterness. Medium body, slightly warming, smooth start and crisp finish. Medium carbonation.
