Hazed lemon gold body with a short white head, this is a rare unfiltered Pilsner (Zwickl!) in New Zealand. Floral aroma of lemon and spice is much like German noble hops, but the yeast gives it an unpleasant banana ester odor, at a strength that’s really only seen in Hefeweizen and perhaps some American-made Belgian Ales/Saisons. The yeast doesn’t do much here other than muddle the nose, leaving it estery, banana-heavy and yogurt-like. Medium body, dry, a little tart, with an enjoyably creamy mouth feel. Banana, lemon, yeast and pithy bitterness in the finish. A bit of a mess given the yeast, and with a cleaner strain or perhaps light filtration it could be a low 4. Still the body is nice, making it one of the softer beers I’ve found while on travel in New Zealand. The pepper, grass, and lemon pith hop bitterness is the highlight, though it creeps over into astringent lemon peel territory at times. Not a bad pilsner. Thirst quenching, easy to drink. Was a great choice during a hot central otago afternoon by the lake.

I realise, when it comes to evaluating a pilsner these days, we in NZ are not perhaps quite duly qualified to rate a beer of this European species?
Pilsner or pils (a beer) as it is widely referred to in Europe has been bastardized for many years, almost leaving the Czechs without a national identity! It took its name from the city of Pilsen (Plzeň, Bohemia, Czech Republic of course, where it was first produced in 1842. However, let me say, after uttering that request for ’een pils’ hundreds of times during my OE in Holland and Germany many moons ago, I was totally unaware I was doing the Czech republic an undue injustice to their Bohemian root trophy beer. Total blasphemy in their eyes, really, I suppose. However, this Queenstown Brewery Pilsner, to cut to the chase, leaves the original Pilsner Urquell for dead. Well done. Prost!

I feel a bit mean and spiteful when I say there is not a lot of body, carry, or love in this. The brewer has two beers a brown one and a yellow one. Market covered. And they’re both a bit "emperors new clothes" What hop is all up front and only just hangs on.as a grassy front note. Appears golden with plenty of gentle sparkle and some frothy white head that gently subsided into the glass. The aroma dwells mainly in passionfruit pulp and lemon juice, perhaps just a little bit of vegetal tang. Typically pilsner mouthfeel with a slight velvetiness before a dose of those fruits come back along with grapefruit and ripe goosberry. It is a tremendously likeable pilsner. It’s just a shame I only have the one bottle as I agree with my learned friend Omega, this beer is perfectly sessionable. It would be nice to find it on tap somewhere with a bit of sun.
