Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an amber ale brewed with brio. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years. Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery. The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers. This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

Unfiltered over-steeped tea brown white head that laces. Nice yeasty flavour, caramel malt, punch of booze, touch of mild bitterness at the finish. Its a classic belgian beer that make me happy to drink.

Pours brown from the bottle and leaves a thick, foamy head that gently subsides to a creamy layer. The aroma is bubblegum, cherry, kind of dank. The taste is the beers true strength. Sweet, with a dry, lightly bitter finish. The respectable depth of flavor reveals cherry, caramel, bubblegum, banana, and bready, yeasty notes. Medium bodied with a prickly carbonation. Good.

750mL corked and caged. Nose richly malty, dark with brown sugar and subdued red fruity esters, some alcohol fumes. Pours copper-amber, an unusual dusky color when collected in the glass somewhere between dark chestnut and tawny-ruby, laces with rocky beige head. Taste lightly sweet with rich, thick malt and cherry coming to the fore, dates, figs, light plum, lesser light red berry, jammy with light cloves and a smear of wheat and banana. Fresh and bright with a little candy -- this is really a sterling transitional beer, the freshness and brightness of a lighter blonde but with a scoop of the more complex malt and alcohol developments of the darker and heavier beers. Subtle but enjoyable tartness. Minimal bitterness and only a dusty layer of hops, though neither was expected in spades. Warming but gently and the alcohol is not as unrestrained as I initially flinched, body really only a thin medium despite the heft of the malt and booze, and theres some muddling of even the strongest flavors. Still, very rich with average complexity to slightly above, and scores extremely well where it counts, that old lowlands concept of digestibility. So, on the whole, not their best, but very enjoyable. [2017.02.04: 3.7]

PREZENTACJA: przejrzyste, ciemno bursztynowe wpadające w miedź, bardzo obfita piana opada do kołnierzyka, nie zdobi szkła;
AROMAT: delikatny - "belgijski karmel", czyli palony cukier trzcinowy z suszem owocowym, brzoskwinią i pomarańczą, do tego lekki mosiądz;
ODCZUCIE: ciało średnie, wysoko nasycone, puszyste ;
SMAK: słodki - kompot z suszu, mosiądz, cukier palony, rodzynka, śliwka, ledwo wyczuwalny alkohol, niska krtka karmelowa goryczka, posmak palonego cukru ;
OGLNIE: nic szczeglnego, kolejny niezły belgijski klasyk, no, może odrobinę zbyt słodki.

On tap. Very thick, creamy foam, gone in a fe moments. Glorious aroma, nice moth feel, this beer is fabulous. Alcohol aspect is welcomingly subdued, allowing full enjoyment of the flavor. Excellent all around.

I had this a while ago and was baffled by this one so this will be a bit of a ballpark rating. Pours amber with a big foamy head. Taste was quite unusual. I would describe it as "vaguely Belgian", with some spice notes, some hops and a slightly dry finish. I havent tried a beer like this before.

Bottle. Clear amber-orange body, big creamy white head with good retention and plenty of lacing. Aroma of autumn leaves, earthy hops, confectioner sugar, coriander and hints of tobacco. Taste of sugary malts, spices, a touch of herbal hops, boozy bitterness and some leather. A little rough, but still very nice.

Bouteille 33cl, V&B Grenoble.
