Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an ’amber’ ale brewed with ’brio’. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years. Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery. The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers. This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

cattaneopapa (391) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 7, 2016
330ml bottle from LCBO. 8.0% alc./vol. Pours a hazy deep amber colour with two finger of lasting head. Aromas of apples, citrus, caramel and banana esters from the yeast. Taste matches the aroma with notes honey and dates. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel. It makes an excellent desert beer.

Alpha10 (757) - Ontario, CANADA - NOV 7, 2016
2016/11/07 - Pours a hazy, medium orange-amber colour with a thick, frothy, beige head that slowly reduces and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is toffee, brown sugar, Belgian yeast, spices, dried dark fruits (prunes, raisins) and grassy, earthy hops. Taste is yeast, toffee, raisins, spices, biscuit and crisp, grassy hops. Mouthfeel is medium and oily with lots of sharp carbonation and a spicy, drying, bittersweet finish. Some really nice malt and hop character out of this. Crisp and flavorful. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

the aroma is caramel and fruity with shades of toffee, clover, plum and sweet wine... the taste is fruity and malty with notes of dried apple, toffee, candy, bisquit and sweet wine... sweet, bitter and dry aftertaste...

Embrouille (2853) - SWITZERLAND - OCT 12, 2016
Bottled 33cl. It pours a murky amber beer with a nicely remaining, mountainous chunky off white head. Strong notes of pear throughout. Yeast dominated. Remarkably smooth. Sweet. Subdued bitterness. Some lingering grassy yeasty notes in the finish which is reminiscent of dandelion.

L: -pours a cloudy, glowing amber with a huge, frothy, offwhite head -high carbonation visible -big chunks of yeast settling at the bottom of the glass S: -not reallly willing to open up -bready,caramel,sugar,earthy,slight funk, iced coffee, grainy, tea T: -also very subdued -caramel,toffee,bready,strawberries,faint coffee, plums F: -low to medium carbonation -medium body -alcohol noticeable O: One thing about these Gouden Carolus Beers is, that they are quite different from eachother. This at times seemed like a Blend of English Brown Ale & Flamish Red. Unfortunately, this didn’t want to open up.

Hopverdju (1266) - BELGIUM - AUG 18, 2016
Afdronk: iets zoet.

33cl. Pours orange amber with white thin head. Crispy and fresh fruity aroma. A bit of sugars, malt and a whiff of hops. Strong, almost IPA like hoppiness and bitterness in the taste. Clean, sharp tastes. Medium bodied, crispy and moderately carbonated. A nice drink when served both warm and cold.
