Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an amber ale brewed with brio. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years. Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery. The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers. This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

Poured from a 330ml bottle. Pours a deep amber with a bubbly, off-white head. Smell is as youd expect from a strong, darker belgian beer. Plenty of malts and dark fruits, a some spices. The taste is of caramel, spices, malts, plenty of fruit character including green apple which surprised me. Quite full bodied, medium carbonation, went down very well with a lovely smooth finish and a slightly alcoholic feel.

colore ambrato, schiuma abbondante e persistente, al naso decisi sentori di malto. Sapore di malto tostato e luppoli. Inizio dolce ma finale decisamente amaro, corpo medio. Una birra facile da bere ma che regala poche sorprese.

Pours a not too attractive murky/dark amber. Good white head, ok retention and lacing. Pretty intense aroma of caramel, toasted malts, plus vivid fruity notes of pear and orange. Taste is mainly sweet with sugar and caramel malts, balanced just enough by toasted malts. Fruity notes of pear and maybe banana. Possibily a hint of spiciness. Finishes dry. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation, looking towards full/creamy but quite not getting there. Very much ok.

33cl bb02/2019 - In a way the quintessential amber ale on Belgian steroids to end the argument that there ought to be more of this: innocent caramel and toasted malts amped up to dried apricot liqueur and to the point where you start asking whether a Mrzen and a Marillengeist wouldnt be just as satisfying. Sparkling, carbed, dry, made for foodpairing. Yeasty astringency meets some herbal hop zing (cooked nettle) in finish. Hm.

Cask. Amber in colour. Sweet malts. Caramel. Spicy. Fruity. Thin for ABV. Rather disappointing! (2008)

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy amber with an off-white head. On the nose raisins, faint chamomile, a very faint resinous note, honey, light spice, and a bit of vanilla. Taste wise, sweet with excellent light carbonation that showcases more of the the dried fruit, raisin bread like notes, almost in the realm of fruit cake, with some light bitterness to combat the sweet that heads into sweeter maltier notes with a lot more of the dried fruit, a bit more bitterness, clove and woody malt notes in the finish. Repeat purchase for sure.

Flesje thuis gedronken. Amberkleurig, licht troebel, heftig schuimend bier. Aroma van gist en fruit. Smaak is fruitig en ietsje bitter. Nasmaak is bitter. Bier voor een warme zomerse dag.
