Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an ’amber’ ale brewed with ’brio’. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years. Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery. The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers. This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2014 Licht amberkleurig, flinke, witte schuimkraag bij inschenken. Aroma is fruitig, citrus en abrikoos, hoppig, gist en mout. Zacht palet, zeer licht melig medium tot volle body. Licht zuur, medium zoet, medium bitter.

Teran (345) - Belgrade, SERBIA - DEC 29, 2017
Big bottle of 0,75 dl with champagne-like cork. Amber not so much haze, or almost clear copper, with massive beige top. Bubbles non stop. Sweet orange, toffee, cracker-like malt. Little thinner in palate than expected, but strong in everything else. Very complex and solid, but medium body is surprise. Beer hard to define, anyway first class with some non expecting elements.

Bottle from la supérette a bières. Cloudy amber color, creamy white head. Yeast, malts, strong hops, good

Beautiful soft perfumey aroma, classic belgian aroma. Coppery colour, lovely persistent doughy head. Sweetish malty taste. Erm, it's a belgian beer - I can detect that - but it does nothing. (I find this about .2 better than the numbers above. Gets much better once the bottom yeast is added. -anna)

Bottle (thanks fatphil). Pours amber with whiteish head. Aroma is fruity, sugary, malty, apple. Flavor is sweet and bitter, malt, fruits. Overall: very good.

Marduk (8622) - Reval, ESTONIA - DEC 2, 2017
330ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Clear brown color. Huge size, thick tan head, stays. Yeasty, yarrow, sweet, alcohol, papery in aroma. Yarrow, herbal, spicy, some cinnamon, alcohol in taste. Alcohol, yarrow, sweet in aftertaste. Boozy in mouth. Dry mouthfeel. Thin body. But yarrow disturbs me. Doable brew.

suurjuust (3850) - ESTONIA - DEC 2, 2017
330ml bottle shared by Phil, thanks! Clear darkish amber pour, big light beige head. Nose is pretty belgian, caramel, malt, sugary sweetness. Flavor is pretty belgian also, sweet caramel, dried fruit, sugar. Dry and caramelly finish, floral notes. Not bad at all.

Bottle from the Offie, Leicester. Drunk at home. Caramel brown/amber, just a touch hazy, with a large foamy beige head. Toffee, candy sugar, hazelnut, gardenia, vanilla bean and sourdough in the aroma. Sweet boozy taste burnt sugar malty notes all the way to the finish. There's a delightful balancing hop midway though, but it's still a pretty sweet beer. Some berry notes and more toffee in the aftertaste. Full carbonation. As good as I'd hoped.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2017 Amber, a bit hazy. Aroma slightly yeasty, Taste fruity and Ends with burned Tones, rather than bitterness

Bottle sample at a tasting at Max's place. Thanks Vova. 2009 edition. Clear copper with beige head. The aroma has notes of prune, dried fruits, syrupy. Sweetish flavor with notes of syrup, prune, some alcohol, yeasty and sticky. Dry, medium to full-bodied.

mice (1102) - FINLAND - OCT 2, 2017
Red and copper brown beer with huge head. Aroma has strong Belgium yeast feeling. Also sweet herbs, some fruits and berries, strawberry at least. Taste has Belgium yeast, malts, herbs, raisins, dried fruits and hints of alcohol. Medium body, quite big carbonation which gets more balanced on the glass. Good quality, but not best Gouden Carolus.
