Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an ’amber’ ale brewed with ’brio’. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years. Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery. The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers. This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

Bottle from Bert’s Bierhuis. The beer has an amber color and a large tinted white head, with a lot of bubbles. The aroma is caramel, malts, yeast, fruits and hops. The taste is full and spicy and after a while it’s fresh. Tones from malts, a little bitterness from the hops and spices. Different taste are well balanced. The finish is fresh, dry and a little bitter. Not as good as the other ones from Carolus, but they also show with this beer that brewing is their speciality. Bravo!

Bottle from the Offie, Leicester. Drunk at home. Caramel brown/amber, just a touch hazy, with a large foamy beige head. Toffee, candy sugar, hazelnut, gardenia, vanilla bean and sourdough in the aroma. Sweet boozy taste burnt sugar malty notes all the way to the finish. There's a delightful balancing hop midway though, but it's still a pretty sweet beer. Some berry notes and more toffee in the aftertaste. Full carbonation. As good as I'd hoped.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Max's place. Thanks Vova. 2009 edition. Clear copper with beige head. The aroma has notes of prune, dried fruits, syrupy. Sweetish flavor with notes of syrup, prune, some alcohol, yeasty and sticky. Dry, medium to full-bodied.

Red and copper brown beer with huge head. Aroma has strong Belgium yeast feeling. Also sweet herbs, some fruits and berries, strawberry at least. Taste has Belgium yeast, malts, herbs, raisins, dried fruits and hints of alcohol. Medium body, quite big carbonation which gets more balanced on the glass. Good quality, but not best Gouden Carolus.

Sterke Belgische ale met veel smaak: kruidig en bitter met enige zoete accenten.

PhillyCraft (7904) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 22, 2017
Backlog, Bottle, pours a hazy golden color with massive and frothy white head and plenty of lace around the inside of the glass. Noted of belgian fruit, candy sugar, light toffee, grapes, and yeast. Pretty malty but somewhat easy at the 8 percent alcohol. Decent Belgian strong

Beamer (115) - Malden, NETHERLANDS - AUG 19, 2017
Licht bruin heftig schuimend biertje, smaak moutig, fruitig en licht bitter, nasmaak bitter maar blijft niet lang hangen. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
