COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an ’amber’ ale brewed with ’brio’. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years. Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery. The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers. This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

In a chilled mug: poured a beautiful, dark copper with a very thick, lingering head and a ton of lacing. Somewhat hazy when held to the light. Aroma is sweet corn and alcohol, drowning out a few other hints of fruit and brown sugar. Very very sweet. Caramel is certainly there, but is beaten into submission by the alcohol content and the very sweet aftertaste. Slight bitter twinge to the finish, but negligible. I’ve had Belgians with higher alcohol that managed a much better balance than this.

Bottle, 0.33l. Clear deep ruby pour, three finger frothy off-white head. Very good retention, long lasting, thick lacing on the glass. This one’s a looker. Intense caramel on the nose, heavily malty with nice herbal touch. Body a bit thinner then expected. Medium carbonation, regular texture. Somewhat light palate. Bittersweet taste with slight acidity towards the finish. Aroma pretty much similar to nose, heavily malty. Lots of caramel, quite herbal, peppery. Brown sugar, not too sweet though. Sticky. Alcohol presence is not that well hidden, slight burn on the tongue, drying mouthfeel. Overall, quality brew but nothing exceptional. Decent ale.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2017 Pretty much the perfect blend between the Tripel and the Classic Carolus. Such a great beer to enjoy, Carolus beers never disappoint and this one is no exception. Quite more light compared to the ones mentionned above, but a strong character nonetheless! I prefered this one over the Hopsinjoor variant actually. APPROVED BY TAVERNY’S BLACK METAL CREW!

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Light amber colour, cloudy, beautiful perfectly lacing off-white head. Aroma: fresh rosemary, anise, locorice, caramel malts, toffee. Mushrooms as it warms. Medium body. Medium dry taste. Nice semi dark malts. Spicy yeast. Fruity. Very good.

Pours hazy amber with a big, long-lasting, foamy, off-white head that leaves lacing. The aroma contains caramel, peach, citrus, malt, hops and some spices. It tastes medium fruity sweet to light hoppy and spicy bitter. A bit of a metallic note in the finish at first but it disappears after a while. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Delicate balance. Not as overwhelming as the other Gouden Caroluses but: Het Anker does it again!
