UPDATED: MAY 22, 2017 Unfortunately, I had to drink this one quite quickly, on tap, way too cold, @Le Falstaff, Paris, ?cause I was supra-late to get back home... Yet, this was a pretty good drink without a doubt! Rather close to the Gouden Carolus Classic, with a deep and very sweet palate, hints of caramel and chocolate, that?s everything I like about strong or dark beers so there was many aspects I enjoyed a lot in this one. Alcohol was apparently quite well hidden, but once again, It was way too cold to judge perfectly... Still, a pretty fucking great one. Definitely APPROVED BY TAVERNY?S BLACK METAL CREW!

Donkerbruine kleur met wit-beige schuimkraag. Geur is oud en hout. Smaak is een tikkeltje karamel, een beetje rood fruit en een klein zoetigheidje.

bottle at Kulminator. Pours dark brown, wmall off-white head. Very nice dark malt aroma, a bit of apples, red cabbage and balsamic vinegar. Has evolved very beautifully, but what is striking is the density of the body compared with Gouden Carolus of these days. This should be their standard again - tasty ans full of character AND ageing potential.

Bottle at De Kelk in Brugges. The barman was very accomodatin in there, so much so that I went to order something more expensive than this and he said that he had 2 bottles of this gear left that wasn’t on the menu. I’m a huge advocate of the Gouden Carolus range so this further cemented the excellent impression I have developed of Belgian hospitality. Poured a dark Reddish Brown with a Beige head. Aroma of heavy hitting Belgian ale. Dark, baked fruits. Plums & Raisin with candy sugar and a heavy Port like booziness. Reminded me a bit of the Kaizer Van Der Blauw which is one of my favourite all time beers. Having 7 years on it no doubt helped with the complexity and depth of flavour. A real treat.

Bottle at home, bought at Brugs Bier Festival 2015 (THT 21/06/11). Beautiful deep reddish brown colour, foamy beige head that dissappears quickly. Rich and complex vinous nose (filling the nostrils directly after popping the bottle) and taste big on red and dried fruits like berries and plums, ripe apples, liquorice, sweet madeira/porto tones, some nuts and spicy clove and ginger, herbal cough syrup, light but roasted malty notes with faint coffee and chocolate, slightly dusty. Lingering wine-like fruity and dry finish, beautifully lasting. No big abv. Medium body, low carbonation. Never tasted anything this close to beer perfection, amazing. #500th rating

Last vintage 2008 bottles poured & sold @BBF ’15, ZO. Massive sweet liquorice and sandalwood of HQ in aroma. Tastes like sweet Rooibos-infused Gouden Carolus, a weird spicy sort of ambermalty Speciale Belge. No abv noticeable whatsoever. Ends on refined, but dusty sweet notes of prune marmelade and dry plum wine. Nice mellow vintage, not my cup of Rooibos though.
