COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 26D). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 16020 (BBF 15/02/2019). AROMA: moderate malt aroma with caramel notes, followed by dried prunes and a alcohol aroma (almost solvent). APPEARANCE: dark ambar color and clear. medium beige head with good retention. lace formation. TASTE: similar to the aroma with medium malt character (toasty, caramelly) and dried prunes flavor. medium-low to low bitterness with a slightly bitter and dry finish. PALATE: medium body with medium carbonation. faint alcohol warmth. OVERALL: a good belgian strong ale, more suited for aging.

PapaCanard (181) - SWITZERLAND - AUG 5, 2017

CraftyHare (129) - Adelaide, AUSTRALIA - AUG 4, 2017
330ml bottle pours dark opaque brown with fine beige head. Aromas of stone fruit, yeast and caramel malt. Flavours of caramel, toffee, fig, almond milk, burnt sugar, bready yeast and spice. Perfect amount of carbonation and alc vol. Unique and memorable Belgian strong ale. True liquid gold.

Sometimes when you see something on sale you have to pick it up:

Gouden Carolus Classic 8.3% Bottle at Aeon Liquors in Kyoto.

A deep brown with a light beige head that lingers like a milk mustache. The aroma is candied fruits, plums, raisins, biscuit. Fairly light bodied but rich in flavor and with a bit of heat. The taste is toffee, raisins and malt balls covered in chocolate. Good stuff.

I’ve had this beer previously in a big bottle and loved it, yet never rated it (because the thought had not yet crossed my mind to post ratings!). This on-tap tasting comes from the Belgian Beer Cafe at the airport in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, while waiting for a flight. It’s pretty much what I remember -- very, very good. Aroma: dark dried fruits. Flavor: figs, dates, ripe plums, raisins, prunes, caramelized brown sugar, yeast, bananas, ripe black grapes. Mouthfeel: medium- to full-bodied; creamy, soft finish.
