COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Bought a bottle at Bert’s Bierhuis. Has a dark brown color with a light brown and large white head, highly carbonated. Aroma of sweet caramel and lightly roasted. Spicy touch of coriander and a lot of fruit with a nice balance between sweet and bitter, and is a little sour. The finish is long a fruity. Overall, it’s what you like, but this beer is nearly as good as the triple Carolus. A really nice strong ale.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2018 Donker goudbruin kleur.

From bottle in Belgian ale glass. Pours murky dark brown with big bubbly tan head and malty aroma mixed with brown sugar and a bit of rubber(?). Rich, smooth malty taste that reminds me of a Christmas pudding

Dark, almost opaque brown. Almost zero head and lacing. Fruit, sangria, barlywine, black cherry, lambrusco. Thin palate not much complexity, shallow profile. Probably a better bet for wine enthusiast. Overall not bad... Just not my style. 25.4 ounce bottle gifted by our friend 'Barn'

This is lovely. Almost like a lovely port or red wine, big fruity round taste with aroma of raisins. Very boozy but very drinkable. Definitely coming back for more.

Good triple, nothing particular, just the whole set of factors with the nice aroma and firm taste ranks between the better triples.

18-12-2017; bottle; at home (bought at beerwulf.com, #15 of their Christmas advent calendar). The looks of the beer are nice. The beer has a rich and dark colour. The colour is a lovely ruby red, with a nice glow. On top of the beer a nice creamy layer of soft slightly yellowish grey foam. Foam retention is average. A nice drape and lacing are left. The smell of the beer is nice. It is like you can expect from a Belgian Strong Ale. I smell some nice rich malt aromas. They give sweet aromas of caramel, some toffee, some liquorice, some plum and raisins. Lovely, rich and perfect for winter. Hops give some fruity and herbal notes. The yeast gives it a final spicy touch. Great. The alcohol is also present in the smell. The taste of the beer is very nice. It is perfectly balanced. Warming sweet malts, with some candy sugar, toffee and liquorice, together with bitter herbal hops and spicy yeast. The yeast also gives a slight creamy touch. Very nice. Gentle, delicate, but a bomb of flavours. It is very nice. The palate of the beer is very good to. Full body, silky smooth, medium carbonation and a nice tingling touch of alcohol. All in all, a great beer. Definitely worth a top 50 ranking. I like it.

From the Needle & Pin, Loughborough. Deep red, chocolate, toffee and some raisin. As with a lot of Belgian beers, very little alcohol taste despite its ABV. Quite simply one of the best beers around.

33 cl. bottle @ Home. Aroma: not very intense aromas of caramel, toasted malts, candy sugar, brown sugar, sweet alcohol. Some dark dried fruits (prunes, raisins, dates), ripe bananas and spices overtones. Appearance: brown to dark brown color, it seems low to medium hazy. Light brown foam with very high head thickness. High to very high head retention. Medium Brussels' lacing. Quite creamy and dense foam. Taste: medium to high sweetness, low bitterness, no sourness. Flavors of caramel, candy sugar, brown sugar, molasses, dates, raisins, prunes, sweet alcohol, spices. Hints of good Porto wine. Balance is on the sweet side. Palate: low to medium body, oily silky texture, low carbonation, very long sweet finish with the same good and sweet flavors of caramel, candy sugar, brown sugar, molasses, dates, raisins, prunes and sweet alcohol. Alcohol is only noticeable because of its sweetish aromas and flavors, but no throat warming is noticeable. Overall: very good beer. It's mainly sweet but not cloying. Very good appearance, and flavors. Aromas are not very intense. Alcohol not noticeable. Intense, complex, and really enjoyable. Really good beer.
