COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus Classic. The 75cl bottles are closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. This exceptional ale ages well, developing a refined complexity and intense aromas. With powerful notes of roasted malts, caramel and plums, its surprisingly soft and fruity aroma combines a warm roundness with a refreshing taste. An imperial brew to cherish and enjoy in moderation.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

Reviewed 12/25/2012. 11.2 oz bottle (2011 vintage) into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a hazy dark brown color. The head is a one finger light cream color with nice texturing around the edge of the glass. Retention isn’t that good, unfortunately, but lacing is attractive but sparse. S: There’s a strong aromatic bouquet of raspberries and chocolate, with underlying notes of cream, crisp pears, toffee, brown sugar, honey, and lavender. I really love inhaling this beer, there’s so much here to take in and enjoy. T: Sweetness explodes on the tongue right from the get go - chocolate and malted milk balls dominate the palate initially. It sounds like this will be hella sweet. Luckily, this features the hallmark of most great BSDAs, that being impressive balance to help tie together the great flavors. Some earthy, flowery hops will try to nudge into the flavor profile midway through, while the finish is (balanced) alcohol, honey and tart dark fruits. The complexity is something you can really chew through and analyze while remaining a delicate, subtle suggestion. M: As a nitpick, this beer sits a bit too heavily on the palate. Otherwise, it’s a silky smooth beer that’s clean as a sheet, but with a great residual aftertaste. A little boozy, but nowhere near harsh on the palate. Not quite as carbonated as it seems initially - but maybe that’s because I let it rest for about 15 minutes. O: Wonderfully crafted yet immensely enjoyable. Right up there in the same conversation as Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus 12 in my mind.

Bottled. 2016 version. Rich fruity aromas, deep dark brown color with big head which decreased after while. In taste dark malts, plum, a little bit of dark chocolate and gentle alcohol.

Bottle at home. 2013 vintage but with a 2008 from last weekend in mind. Also remembering it as new three years ago. So. Heavy, thick body and taste as new. As years go by the body gets thinner and the taste goes from something like a sticky toffee pudding with wine to a balanced beer with tastes of figs, raisins, wood, caramel and sweet liquorice. In the years between the body thins out but the sweetness stays. Actually think it’s best as new or at least 6 years old. Two different beers.

2016 bottle (1 pt 9.4 oz). Pours cloudy dark brown with thin tan head and lacing. Nose of plums, raisins, and candied sugar with some apple notes. Plum with prominent caramel flavor following. Sweet, effervescent finish. Thus would be interesting to try after a few years of cellaring. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Great beer!!!!!!!18,5
