COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition.

This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus Classic.

The 75cl bottles are closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. This exceptional ale ages well, developing a refined complexity and intense aromas. With powerful notes of roasted malts, caramel and plums, its surprisingly soft and fruity aroma combines a warm roundness with a refreshing taste. An imperial brew to cherish and enjoy in moderation.

Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2013 330ml bottle at BXL East dated 11/7/2011 at 11.0% ABV. Very excited to try this beer. Pours amber/plum a bit cloudy. Aroma is fruity and boozy. Taste is fruity and malty and boozy. Taste has huge fruit notes: cherries, plums, raisins, and prunes. Fruit abound. Delicious.

A very pleasing bring-home 25.4 oz bottle carried from a summer trip to take in the Cubs in Chicago. A striking label, I almost do not want to open it. I said almost. The cage and cork come off and I pour into my Trappistes Rochefort glass. The liquid is almost black but has a red tint when backlighted, joined by a vigorous sepia-brown head. Lifting for a whiff I detect cherry, hard candy and biscuit. Enough of that, my first taste, oh my gosh. This is fantastic. Malt, yeast, a deluge of ripe dark fruit, toffee, baked bread. It ends with a just a touch of bitterness. A creamy mouthfeel. Really, really fine. This compares to Rochefort 10 for me. I cannot be more complimentary. This has been a great weekend for tasting, an outstanding quad and a superb imperial stout.

Bb 2026. Brown with slightest ruby and handsome finger of creamy tan head. Sweet French carmel aroma. Plums and cookie dough too. Medium bodied, silky, sweet brown sugar and raisin cake. Filling and perfect for a night cap. Fruit cake, brown sugar and liqueur linger. I preferred the whisky infused version more, but this is still bomb.

From Jul 2008

I picked this bottle up on my last trip to Ft Collins.

It pours a nice ruby brown colour with a 1" head of foam. It doesn't leave much lacing in my glass and the foam shrinks quickly to a fine ring around the glass but the colour is gorgeous. Hmm..

The smell has some good dark fruit going on with plum being the most noticeable. There's also some candy sugar and some caramel malt and...a bit of alcohol. Ok, more than a bit but it's still a goodish whiff.

The taste is big and tasty. Plum, figs, toffee, candy sugar, a little caramel...overall definitely on the sweet side but in a darn good way.

The alcohol is very well hidden, the mouthfeel is fairly light bodied, and the carbonation is light but perfectly suited for this brew. This is very very tasty and very enjoyable but I may not be able to finish the entire 750 at this one sitting. No worries, I'll put a stopper in it and finish it tomorrow. I want a fine drinking experience, which I am having,...I don't want to get drunk. ;^)

I've seen this brew in Colorado before and have always passed on it. I'm glad I decided to give it a try as it is some seriously good beer!

A déguster lentement.

Donker amber/donkerbruin, beige schuimkraag, wazig, redelijk koolzuur.
Aroma: Zoetig, donker fruit, pruim, rozijn, Karamel, toffee, licht zuurtje, geroosterde mout.
Volle body, voldoende koolzuur, redelijk zacht mondgevoel.  Afdronk is kruidig, zoet, licht bitter en warm.
