COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For more than 35 years we had to miss the Christmas beer but in 2002 the tradition was restored with Gouden Carolus Christmas. It’s a strong, dark ruby red ale with character and contains an alcohol percentage of 10.5 % alc.vol. Brewed in August, the beer rests a few months to reach an optimal balance. Six different kinds of herbs and spices and three different kinds of hops define the rich taste followed by a long, well-seasoned aftertaste. Perfect combination with wild, stews or ripened, strong cheeses. Top-class!

Drake (14062) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 21, 2008
11.2 oz. bottle from Market Street Wine Shop Downtown Charlottesville dated 03/08/10. Hazy reddish brown with a big head. Moderate retention and low lacing. Aroma is banana, spice, pineapple, spice. Sweet taste shows notes of pinepple, anise, brown sugar. Alcohol is barely noticeable if at all in either the nose or the taste. Very nice way to end the evening!

Borresteijn (7415) - Zaandam, NETHERLANDS - AUG 18, 2008
On tap. Dark brown beer, beige head. Aroma of candy, christmas spice, malts. Flavour is very sweet, a bit sour, christmas spice (speculaas), roasted malts. Again, like most of their beers, way too sweet for me.

puzzl (3260) - New York, New York, USA - AUG 10, 2008
Bottle. Deep brown pour with a minor head. This beer was not what I was expecting at all. Pine and juniper dance around the malt-sweet and charcoal aroma. Big, lightly sweet malts in the flavor are unctuous but extremely drinkable, with a fast, tobacco and floral finish. Definitely the most drinkable 10.5% alcohol beer I’ve ever had. Well done.

hapjydeuce (1002) - Carlsbad, California, USA - JUL 30, 2008
On tap at O’Briens. Deep burgundy color, fading wispy head with some bubbles. Becomes still after sipping for a while. Very sweet aroma of candy sugar, raisin, rum and a restrained bubblegum note. Toffee, cherry and grape flavors meld with some medium caramel. Ends sugary with a red wine character. Quite alcoholic. Becomes a bit difficult to drink. Somewhat unbalanced.

75cl, from De Hopduvel Gent, complex, yet heavy, clear, small head, very good X-Mas brew

Imaena (2328) - Maputo, MOZAMBIQUE - JUL 19, 2008
750 ml bottle with Paul July 08’. Deep brown amber pour with beige head that falls slowly. Sweet candi sugar and licorice nose. Christmas pudding and rum rasin. Tight small bubbles on the carb. Beautiful well balanced beer. Paal loved it.

DocHop (278) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUL 2, 2008
Pours a very dark, murky amber brown with a tall, thick beige head. Sweet, nutty, caramel, Belgian yeast aroma, like fruity bread. A little of that sweet then soured fruit pokes through in the beginning. The body is spritzy and a little cider like. An oily alcohol lingers on the finish. Overall very smooth and well balanced. Not a favorite style, but a great representative.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2008 75cl bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa, FL). Rated on 3/20/08. Pours a chocolate brown with thin tan head. Smells very sweet with notes of maple syrup, malt, chocolate, caramel, bread, yeast. Flavor is sweet with hints of roasted malt, caramel, toffee, and overtones of port wine and brandy on finish. Very good.
