COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For more than 35 years we had to miss the Christmas beer but in 2002 the tradition was restored with Gouden Carolus Christmas. It’s a strong, dark ruby red ale with character and contains an alcohol percentage of 10.5 % alc.vol. Brewed in August, the beer rests a few months to reach an optimal balance. Six different kinds of herbs and spices and three different kinds of hops define the rich taste followed by a long, well-seasoned aftertaste. Perfect combination with wild, stews or ripened, strong cheeses. Top-class!

Smells like sweet St Fuillien with spruce. Dark brown, maroon. Tastes like liquorish. I wouldn’t for a Christmas gift, but this is tasty beer. Soft thick texture.

Pours a coca cola brown with a thin off white head. Aroma of spices and sweet black licorice. Taste is mostly licorice with some celery or coriander spice flavors. Smooth but somewhat one dimensional. Hides the alcohol very well. Ok but not as good as I expected.

Bottle, shared by Joe. Pours a dark, ruby-brown, with a small, fizzy, tan head. Strong licorice aroma, with some dates, caramel, and black pepper. Sweet and spicy, with a bit of bitterness. Medium to heavy body, with a fizzy, sharp mouthfeel. Fun, spicy, and warming. Pretty nice.

Bottle 330 (from 2016). Reddish-brown, thin beige head. Aroma of pears and herbs and some caramel. Taste is full of sweet licquorice and herbal notes. The 1 1/2 years of storing seems to have shaved off some alcohol notes. Long herbal finish. Nice indeed.

Great feel and good body. The faint hint of licorice made me want to gag. It ruined an otherwise excellent beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle for Christmas last but for some reason I mislaid it. Fine drop. Tastes very smooth and well balanced. No strong alcohol flavour. Nice stuff without the traditional Belgian spice flavours. Raisin like. Plums etc. Nice beer.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2017 Deepest dark brown with frothy tan head. Beautiful. Aroma: an inviting and strong blend of coffee, chocolate, mocha, light cream and cream liquor, buttermilk, jarred dark fruits. Taste: incredible mouthfeel, velvet, creamy. Such a nice development, sweet mocha and dark fruits first, followed by malts and swelling cherry alcohol with creamy lacing, velvet smooth finish mildly bitter with light fruity notes, Christmas cake. Awesome beer.
