For more than 35 years we had to miss the Christmas beer but in 2002 the tradition was restored with Gouden Carolus Christmas. It’s a strong, dark ruby red ale with character and contains an alcohol percentage of 10.5 % alc.vol. Brewed in August, the beer rests a few months to reach an optimal balance. Six different kinds of herbs and spices and three different kinds of hops define the rich taste followed by a long, well-seasoned aftertaste. Perfect combination with wild, stews or ripened, strong cheeses. Top-class!

Served on tap at Brick Store Pub in Decatur. Pours a dark brown-red with a murky profile. Head dissipates quickly, but leaves a massive amount of lacing. Aroma is really dominated by licorice and anise (I mean it) and spice. Taste of licorice, banana, slight alcohol, with a slightly yeasty aftertaste. Overall, a very sweet beer. Nice mouthfeel, a bit chewy. In sum, a very fine Christmastime Belgian, especially for the licorice lovers out there. Gets a very strong recommendation.

Pours dark brown with a lasting beige head, particles noticeable in the end. The smell is very intense and has dried fruits, perhaps citrus, and licorice. The aroma contains lots of licorice, spices, herbs, yeast, caramel, but also hints of cough syrup. Initial taste is heavy sweet, then medium sweet and light spicy bitter. Oily, a bit sticky texture, medium carbonation, full body. Alcohol is relatively well hidden. Reminds me of N’Ice Chouffe but with a heavier smack from the licorice and spices hammer.

Pours a muddy bourbon brown with a short cream-tan head. Mild fruity nose. Banana bread as well. Viscous mouthfeel. Brown sugar, sorghum, and banana. A bubble gum note at the finish.

Bottle. Dark ruby red. Very sweet spicy fruity Christmas ale. Malty (caramel, toffee, candy brown sugar). Fruity (dark fruits, raisins, prunes, cherries?). Like a rum/port flavoured fruitcake. Very spicy and yeasty (lots of floaties). Spicy & fruity finish. A truly wonderful beer! (2008)

Rami Rami is drinking a Gouden Carolus Christmas/Noël by Brouwerij Het Anker at Konstruktorska Business Center Mega przyprawowe (anyzek i galka muszkatulowa zwlaszcza) w aromacie. W smaku cukierki anyzowo-lukrecjowe, te takie ciemne gumowate. Reszta nutek bardziej w tle.
Rami Rami: Ta reszta nutek to ziolowosc, karmel, melasa. Calosc slodka. Anyzek przegiety ale o dziwo sympatyczny. Calosc raczej kategoria UFO :)
Rami Rami: Fajne cialo, syropowe

330ml bottle [Out of Santa Bartlebier’s bag, thank you very much!]. Clear chestnut colour with ruby glimmer and average, thick, creamy, mostly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Herbal, spicy aroma, notes of liquorice and clove, a fruity touch of plum. Taste is sweet, herbal and spicy, notes of liquorice, clove, cinnamon, a touch of ginger and nutmeg; oily texture, smooth and soft, slightly sticky palate.

Espuma marrón claro que permanece, color marrón oscuro casi negro que no deja pasar mucho la luz donde apenas se aprecian burbujas brotar, aroma floral en nariz, sabor especiado y dulce con recuerdo a regaliz.

Dark brown, creamy lasting small head. Dark spices like juniper berries, cloves and Jamaican piment, with herbal hoppy notes and toasted brown bread. Lots of alcohol but also satisfying, with bubbly but not heavy carbonation. Not so sweet as expected actually. Decent brew, extremely Belgian and quality is fine. Clean but not filtered to death. Decent brew. (On tap at the brewery restaurant)

Strong aromas of licorice. Pours a dark brown with tan head. Strong taste of licorice with a sweet finish. As a serial hater of licorice I did actually fairly enjoy this.

It's a shame I have a bad cold. I could smell earlier in the evening but have apparently lost my sense of smell. 12 oz. bottle from Monastery Greetings/Belgian-Style Ales. Pours a dark brown with a good tan head. Aroma…can't tell. Taste…also can't tell much. The mouth feel is very satisfying and silky but also vinous and boozy down the gullet. I would definitely like to try this when I have all of my faculties. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
