A full flavoured creamy Australian style stout with delicate chocolate and liquorice flavours from the combination of pure malts. It is very easy on the palate with moderate alcohol content. An exceptional cold weather beer served at cellar temperature. Winner of the Champion Beer at the 1997 Australian and International Beer awards, Small Brewery Section and Best Exhibit in Class 34 in 2000. Winner of Australia’s best Stout at the National Festival of beers 2001 for the second time and a long list of International medals continuing to 2011 with 2 medals for both bottled and draught products. Perfect for beef and Hatlifter pie and all stews and casseroles. Also very popular with many Asian dishes.

UPDATED: OCT 2, 2013 Mild nut, fruit and coffee flavours. Pours deep brown with a very thin had. A little thin but still a very nice beer.

Cask Half Pint at White Horse, Parsons Green, London in Oct 2010 - Opaque Black in colour. Malty; roasty/burnt malts, caramel, toffee, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Fruity; dark fruits, raisins. Hoppy; hint of citrus hops. Sweetish roast malty leading to a dry mildly bitter finish. Very drinkable. (2010-10)

Had two each with a friend out of bottle into a snifter. Dark with the tiniest hint of red when you hold it up to the light. Tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, malts. Slightly sweetish taste, medium body and average carbonation. Medium length finish. Very pleasant beer, will have again.

(Bottle) Pours very dark brown - clear with ruby highlights when held to light - and a fair tan head. Pleasant, gentle aroma - roast malt, notes of vanilla. Medium body, good bright carbonation. Taste is good but rather thin. Sweet dark malts have a cola character, albeit richer and more complex. Very drinkable.

From bottle in porter glass. Looks a bit like cola with a one finger head. Roasted malts impart a smokey quality to the taste that’s unique amongst the many stouts I’ve sampled over the years.

Malty bouquet. Pours black with clingy head. Upfront malt followed by chocolate and a warm slightly bitter finish. Too malty for a stout ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black pour with a thin tan head. Chocolate, aniseed, a little roast aroma. Taste is chocolate, cola, coffee, not bad but a little thin

Lovely promising aroma that doesn’t fail to deliver, no nasties here. High standard maintained from start to finish

330ml bottle into pint glass. ’Serve at cellar temperature’ OK, I don’t have a cellar but it’s 30 degrees Celsius inside today, so 10 minutes in the freezer. Sweet dark chocolate nose. Totally impenetrable black beer with large solid tan head. Body is surprisingly light, even spritzy on the tongue. Ending with bitter cocoa. Slightly lingering. A bit light on for my taste but OK.

Thin and sweet, tastes like roasted coffee flavoured coca cola. Pitch black colour and nice aroma.

mattyhennessy (376) - Highton, AUSTRALIA - FEB 2, 2014
From the previous ratings I was expecting a little more from this. The body is quite thin and watery for a stout. The typical chocolate and coffee notes don’t seem to quite translate and the flavour of darkly roasted barley seems predominant. A decent tan head and good carbonation. Slight plum and smokey coffee aroma
