Aroma of chocolate and cinnamon when cracking the cap. Turns more alkaline and grainy as it warms. The first few gulps are sweet and surprisingly light. After that, hops dominate and some soap creeps in.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, borderline black body with a decent if not conservative tan head. Looks good. Smell: Cocoa, coffee without the bitterness and a little sweet but everything is on the down-low though, even at a warmer temp. Taste: Some bitter coffee, burnt a little with a small sour twinge. Tastes a little like watery coffee with. Not very imperial. Mouthfeel: A bit thin & watery in the palate with low carbonation. It is smooth in a way but the beer feels unbalanced somehow. Straight black pour, lightly tan head. Aroma is sweet, chocolatey, fruity - lots of cherry scent, light orange liqueur. Taste is nice but not really "imperial" in intensity - chocolate, cherry, lactose, earthy notes. A bit dry in the finish. Satisfying, but dont expect anything earth-shattering.

473 ml can. Black, with a thin beige head. Roasted malty aroma with coffee and chocolate, notes of fruits. The flavour is sweetish roasted malty, with licorice, coffee and smoky notes. A little alcohol warmth in the finish. Tasty.

Pours black with a beige head that laces the glass. Aroma and flavour are chocolate, coffee, with carmel malts. Good balance of bitter and sweet with a full body. Well done.

Appearance: nearly opaque black with only the faintest hints of clear brown around the margins, two fingers of rocky beige head, excellent retention and good lacing. (4/5) Aroma: roasty malts, coffee and chocolate, liquorice, vinous dark fruits, molasses and toffee. (6/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, moderate-high bitter. (6/10) Medium-full slightly slick body, moderate carbonation, off-dry lingering bitter and mild warming finish. (3/5) A bit thin and light for the style. Having no intrusive ABV is all well and good, but this style can and should exhibit much more warming presence than is present. Im usually all about the hops, but to be frank the little hop character here isnt helping much. Really more like a Quad than an RIS, but without any of the deep barrel-aged complexity I look for in that case. OK, but not better than that. (12/20)

bottle @ Vino Bellissimo / Lima OH --- dated: 2015/March/13. Aroma of malt and light spice. Opaque brown/black color, two-finger deep tan head, heavy bands of lace. Taste is roasted malt that adds light fizz and chocolate on the swallow, turning from there to light spice and prunes in a soft finish. Im not getting the alcohol. The parts dont work well together, perhaps partially due to the date.

Bottle from LCBO. Bottled Jan 2016. 8.0% and a different label from the one pictured. Pours medium brown with well-retaining and lacing lightish beige head. The aromas wonderfully rich, its sweet and roasty, strong molasses... Vinous, thick and intoxicating. Aah. Tastes a bit less as multilayered and lovely but stil very good: roasted malts, chocolate, molasses. The sugary sweetness is kinda too much even, Id love more hoppiness and bitterness in a RIS. On the palate its not as thick and sticky as Id have expected, its very soft and smooth and somewhat lightish with mellow carbonation. The alcohol is well covered. Overall a very enjoyable brew, albeit a tad too sweet as said, and could use more Imperial boldness. Loved the aroma the most.
