Tap @ The Bistro’s 2010 10th Annual Double IPA Festival. A golden color. This one has a barley wine like flavor with dark fruits, raisins and sweet malty flavors.

Bottle. Pours a bright golden orange with a small head. Nose is light and citrusy and sweet with a touch of pine. Taste is flavorful and bitter sweet, and full of citrus. 12 oz bottle poured. Pours a clear copper color with a thin foam head. Wet grain, malty aroma with some citrus. Very nice citrus sweet flavor. Juicy, though finishes on a bready note. From the 750 ml golden foil covered bottle. The bottling date looks like 02/20/12 (!) Not sure how I missed that when I bought it or why it would still be on the shelf. Murky reddish-amber pour with lingering off-white head. Yeah, stale hops with a more m alt forward character and something akin to pipe tobacco. Medium. Same malty and muted hop flavor. Too bad I didn’t get a fresh bottle. It became a drain pour.

Sampled from the tap at the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. Pours a hazy orange gold with an off-white head hat dissipates to the edges. A 12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip, the beer presents a dark apricot hue, strikingly clear, and with a porous and almost soapy looking off-white foam. Its depth is short-lived, the head settling, not disappearing but leaving a dignified blanket on the surface of the beer.
The aroma is grapefruit with a hint of lemon, heavy spruce and some very grassy notes. Sharp, grasping. I can’t say that this is my favorite aromatic experience with a dipa, but it certainly isn’t unpleasant. I take my first sip, and the experience is a very dry bitter, the grapefruit and spruce coming alive in my mouth. The edginess of the spruce crawls up the sides of my tongue, dries the tip with a bite, and lays the groundwork for a long, drawn out finish.
The medium body is creamy rather than an expected sticky, and is well carbonated without being too buzzy, carrying the flavors through to a very resiny afterward. I think that I would want to try this beer on tap. I wonder what it’s gone through in the bottle, and believe that I would have a much better experience with this fresh from the brewery. All in all, a pretty darn good beer.
