Trout Hop is brewed with Idaho 2-Row Brewers Malt and German specialty malts and has a deep, rich color and roasted finish without the thick and malty body that often accompanies dark beers. It is kettle hopped and dry hopped with Pacific Northwest hops, resulting in bold and intense bitterness and piney, zesty aroma. The full body and dry finish create a refreshing autumn ale, perfect for any crisp afternoon or cool evening. The spicy hopsof this ale complement rich, flavorful foods. Chocolate mole enchiladas, Indian and Thai curries, and barbeque ribs will accompany nicely.

Pour on tap at Happy GNome, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark chocolate, roast, some nice pine and orange peel hop notes into a bit of caramel, slight coffee. Taste was a mix of coffee, chocolate, roast into some smoke, nice pine, slight herbal notes iwth a hint of citrus, finishing bitter.

For me the best part of this beer is its looks. The choice of hops and the balance of hops to malt is too much in favor of these hops that doesnt work. Just dont like the taste. Looks great tho!

I love a good Black IPA and when I saw this offering from Grand Teton, I knew I was going to have to try it. When I crack the bottle it takes a few minutes as the beer is too cold, but it takes no time at all after the pour to find the aroma of citrus and spruce in the air above the glass. The liquid is a deep, rich, burnt brown, almost shaking its fist at black and taunting it to come one step closer. The surface is covered in a porous, khaki-hued foam, not terribly lightweight, but definitely sticky! The brew is a roasty malt framework, smoky and rich, providing a springboard for the hops flavors coming through. A medium body carries the bitterness, the malt profile coaxing it to comfortable levels, like a lion tamer with a whip and chair. Fantastic balance, excellent levels of bitterness flavor combinations, the carbonation keeping some nice action in my mouth as I take swallow after swallow. The finish is short, doesnt leave a lot of aftertaste in my mouth, but invites me to have another drink with a bit of an unassuming dryness. This stuff is good and I will definitely keep this in mind as a go to brew!

Slap a more prestigious brewer label on this and it would be more the rage. Appearance slightly off-black, non-aggressive musty aroma, aggressive bitterness, somewhat abrasively aggressive finish.

Bottle. Very dark brown, lively brown head. Lots of hard roast and fruity hops combine to give aromas of coffee, stone fruit, pig manure, licorice. Black malt flavours quickly give way to fruity hops with strong piney undertones and long bitterness. The hops and black malt really wrestle for dominance here, but the hops win in the end. Very nice.

Keg at Craft Conundrum, Charleston, 18/02/15. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a moderate tan covering. Nose is light roast, charr, liquorice, earthy hop, dark maltings. Taste comprises liquorice, spice, bitter hops, light cocoa. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok.

Poured from the 4-pack on clearance dated 12/19/13. Jet black with a nice tan collar, has all the visual qualities of a stout, but with more hops than malty sweetness in the taste. Strong yet easy drinking, and on sale, great buy.

On draft at the brewery. Pours black with a tan head. Hoppy nose. Flavors of tobacco with vegetal notes. Bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours a near black color with a moderate tan head on there. Nose is more grassy and floral than it is roasty, though I can get just a hint of some roasting in there. Taste is fairly bitter, though a more robust roasting is coming through underneath. Pretty decent, actually.
