Had this as part of a sampler on tap at Henry House in Halifax NS. Dark ruby, almost black. It stood up very well with fish and chips with loads of malt vinegar.

On Tap At Volo This was a real treat, and a surprise. Deep black pour with a fluffy mocha head. Aroma of roasted malt, touches of coffee, and chocolate, and some really nice sweetness in the form of brown sugar, and maybe some vanilla. The flavor was very satisfying, more oft he brown sugar, vanilla sweetess mixed with the dark roast of the malt, and coffee. A very nice stout!

At the Toronto brewpub. Black pour, big frothy tan head. Nice roasted aroma. Taste is full of flavour - really big roasted notes at the start, followed by some subtle burnt hints and a lingering bitterness. Medium mouthfeel for the style. An excellent example of a dry stout and certainly one of the best Canadian efforts of this style I have had.

[054-20060921] Tap @ Granite (Toronto, ON). Dry malt, dark coffee aroma, like liquid leather. Black body with a very long-lasting light brown head. Tastes like sweet malted coffee, with hints of leather and vanilla. Full, stouty body. Very nice togetherness, nice sweetness.

On tap - Volo. Jet black, very proud fawn coloured head, beautiful. Aroma: Chocolate - smoke aroma, charcoal in there also, coffee too. Flavour: Smooth, smokey, chocolate and coffee, so smooth, so drinkable, wow, I would drink a dozen in a sitting. What a solid brew.

I thought that all the Granite brewery beers were winners. They were all so fresh. The stout was good, not massively bitter, but mildly offensive.

Looks like the picture perfect image of a dry stout. Nice roasty aroma, very inviting. Taste is decent roasty, very dry finish. I've never been much of a fan of this category, but if more were made this way, perhaps I would be -- probably my favorite dry stout.
