25 oz draft - Pours very dark brown with a thin, long lasting tan head. It has a mild aroma of roast malt and some hops. The dark roast malt flavor has a good hops balance and a dry finish. It’s a little thin, but not too bad. Give it some time. Like most bars and brewpubs, they serve it too cold. I rather enjoyed it. esjaygee (3906) - Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 30, 2008
On tap at Rockford Granite City. The waitress, upon bringing me the sampler called this a watered down version of Guinness. That pretty much hits the nail on the head. It kind of looks like a Guinness, it’s brown with a tan head. The aroma has the mildest of coffee aromas, is Granite City scared to put any character into their beers? It’s a stout, not like the general public is going to order this anyway! The body is thin, watery, flavorless with a mild bitter finish, blah. Rant aside, Granite City in Rockford had good food and one of the friendliest wait staffs I’ve had in forever. It’s a shame their beer stinks. shigadeyo (3790) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUL 30, 2009

11/28/2008: Granite City Broad Axe Stout is nitro-induced, os the near black beer is comes with an extremely cream and frothy tan-colored head and silky mouthfeel. The beer is dense, but smooth and has a nice roasty coffee aroma and flavor. It isn’t anything terribly unique or complex, but it goes down quite well nonetheless!
Draught (pint) at Granite City Food & Brewery in Maumee, Ohio. Rating #83 for this beer.

Another so-so impersonation of a stout mirrors the Mom’s Cookies. Any highlights are drowned in a sea of watery blandness. Save your time and money unless you want a cheap tick.
Aroma / Appearance - A black fluid base swirls limply around the glass. Thin bodied and watery the view alone inspires little confidence of a great memorable experience. Coffee and undercooked oatmeal have cheap smoky undertones like a smoking patio rinsed clean by a rain shower.
Flavor / Palate - Watery smoke and cheap coffee tease the palate with a promise of something better. If you took the bottom of the pot and added enough water to unstick it you’d have a good equivalent of this flavor profile. A half hearted release falls just short of average and isn’t worth more than two ounces at best.
An okay looking stout, but really there was not much flavour here. Watered down. Cheap.

Draught at the Cedar Rapids, IA location. Opaque black with foamy light brown head that left a thin, filmy lace on the glass. Smelled of chocolate and roasted malt with a hint of anise and a dash of molasses. Flavor was well rounded with chocolate and coffee notes, but was not as complex as the aroma. There was a pleasant subdued campfire smoke finish. Carbonation was on the low end, and it was creamy, dry, and earthy on the tongue. Pretty good beer. On tap at the Lincoln, NE brewpub. Good black color with great head retention compared to their other beers. Roasted malt and smoke aroma. Extremely mild body. Nice smoke flavor emerges from the void. This seems very smooth due to the lack of character. Not dry enough for me. I’d like to see more hops. This would be a good stout for someone who wants to be seen drinking a stout, without actually having to drink a beer with any taste. Maybe that describes the beautiful people who frequent such a place as this? KAggie97 (3529) - Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA - AUG 19, 2006
Tap at brewpub, Wichita, KS. Pours solid black with an olive-green head and lacing. Rubbery coffee aroma. Flavor is coffee and chocolate. Lighty and syrupy on the tongue. Solid melding of tastes and flavors. umich03jm (3512) - Flat Rock, Michigan, USA - OCT 10, 2014
Tap. Dark reddish-brown pour with almost no head. Aromas are chocolate, oatmeal, and nuts. Tastes boring. Watery chocolate, light roast, light cream. Thin body. 1FastSTi (3360) - Glendale, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 15, 2006
UPDATED: JAN 6, 2008 Cedar Rapids, IA location. Pours to a translucent dark brown body with a fully lasting light brown head. The aroma is chocolate, pretty basic, light licorice. The flavor is light chocolate, heavy coffee, light licorice, decent taste. The palate is dry, roasted, medium bodied.
