Keg at the brewpub, 8/15/16. Dark brown, red tint. Large creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of sweet chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, toffee. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee. Medium bodied, rich, full bodied. MetalNHopHead (1976) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - NOV 4, 2016
Great Dane’s Black Earth Porter is a roasty, malty dark beer that reflects the English tradition. Almost-black pour with a long-lasting creamy head. Lots of roast, toast, and even a little smoke in the aroma. Dark chocolate, coffee, and scorched barley flavors. Some bitterness but it’s not harsh. Full, rich palate. Apparently Madison knows how to do more than German styles. rubbishystuff (2538) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 7, 2016
At downtown location. I think this would be a dark beer people please. Roasted, coffee, chocolate, but still quite drinkable. Good. Serving: Tap kkleu357 (634) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 18, 2015
On cask at the Great Dane. I’m not really a fan of there beer, but this one is ok. Very smooth mouthfeel. Good coffee and chocolate taste.

Draft at the source. Clear deep marron color, beige head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of earthy coffee grounds and cocia powder. Taste has earthy coffee, subtle dark fruit. Light body, very drinkable. thedm (6184) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - JUL 6, 2015
This draft brew from the brewery poured a extremely small sized head of frothy finely sized clear colored bubbles that were fully diminished and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque dark ruby red brown colored body and a poor lacing. The mild aroma was roasted malt. The flat mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering mild roasted malt aftertaste. The weak flavor contained notes of black malt roasted malt and . Not one that I would likely drink again. Dogbrick (13012) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - AUG 22, 2014
Sample at the downtown brewpub. Brownish-black color with a medium beige head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, roast malt and coffee. Medium-bodied with flavors of chocolate malt, roasted coffee and mild hops. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Decent overall. On tap at Fitchburg. Pours a very dark brown with a great nitro-looking off-white head, that retained some lacing. Aroma has chocolate and dark earth. Later, some caramel presence showed. Taste was all watery dark earth - occasionally muted bakers chocolate would show. Their highest rated brew??? Should’ve tried the pale, I guess. phaleslu (10267) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 5, 2014
Draft at the Great Dane in Downtown Madison, served in an imperial pint glass. Gorgeous near-black pour with a finger of creamy beige head. The aroma is too sweat, with tons of chocolate and cream and some vanilla that overwhelm any toast or coffee hanging out in the background. Those come more to the foreground in the flavor, which has far better balance. Light-medium bodied, with soft carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. Good porter.
