On tap at Great Dane downtown. Dark brown with a minimal white head. Aroma of nuts, dark malt and citrus. Taste of dark roasted malts, citrus and light chocolate. tmoreau (4298) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - MAY 2, 2016
Cask sampler at the Doty St. location in Madison, WI., showing a rather clear, dark brown hue, with some amber highlighting, a light layer of brownish tan head foam that produced a persistent ring, and spots of lacing. The nose was roasted and dry, with some dark caramel notes. A little less than medium bodied, with typically fair carbonation for cask, a roasted & earthy bitterness with a touch of citrusy astringency, and a wisp of soapiness on the finish. 5.9% abv listed. jewedekind (450) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 24, 2004
A bit of a brown head that limped along. Not much aroma, but look black and mean in the glass. Bitter bite that overpowers most everything...seems to be from a combo of roasted malt and hops. Roasted flavor is thee but not prominent. I guess this is supposed to be on the dry side of the Black Earth. This is good, but I much prefer the Black Earth. presario (4916) - Stampede City, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 29, 2007

On tap at the brewpub in Madison, WI. This was decent with a good roasted malt, but a bit too sweet and not enough hop. Lots of cocoa, and sweet caramel in the light nose. Body was decently strong and well carbonated, but not quite as creamy as I would have liked. More nutty notes, roasted grains, and mixed dark cereal malts in the flavor. Overall, there’s some room for improvement I think. GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - OCT 4, 2008
Cask at Great Dane (downtown). Poured a clear dark brown color with orange highlights. The head was light brown. Smelled of chocolate, citrusy hops, and roasted nuts. Light to medium bodied and slightly sweet with low carbonation and a smooth mouth feel that you’d expect from a cask conditioned beer. Roasty, subdued chocolate flavor with a light, but distinct grassy hop note. There was also a detracting adhesive tape flavor. So so. phishpond417 (2088) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 21, 2008
This brew pours a dark brownish black colour with a two finger sized tan head. Lace that is left behind is sticky. Aroma is soft, faint with noticeable nutty character. But kind of weak. Taste is slightly metallicy with plum and apple flavors. Overall it’s a pretty average brew. cbfobes (2883) - Quad Cities, Illinois, USA - OCT 24, 2010
On tap at The Great Dane, pours a very dark brown/black with a nice tan head, aroma is of sweet malt with a touch of hops in it, the flavor is smooth with malt, not bad. Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - MAY 16, 2012
On tap at the brewpub in Madison, WI. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma has lots of roasts, some sweeter chocolates and light caramels, and a light piney hopping. Flavor is similar. Roasty, slightly sweet from the chocolate and light caramels, and lightly hopped. Finishes dry and roasty with a light bitterness and a light malt sweetness before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Light body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a decent porter. Nothing special, but enjoyable and easy drinking.
