Medium caramel-amber, cream-colored head is small but dense, leaves a respectable lacing. Sweet honeyed malt aroma with some fresh bread elements. Flavor begins nice, sweet, malt syrup, honey, then takes an off dive at the finish towards bread crusts, with some stale, metallic notes. Full bodied, pronouncedly syrupy but escapes being cloying.
Copper to umber in color. Modest dark ecru head. Aromas of caramel, toasted to light roasted malt, mild spice and dark fruit. Full and a bit oily in feel. Sweet flavors with dark fruit and well developed malts. A touch more hops in this one. Finish was some wood, spice and butterscotch. A good sustaining Doppel. 5/10 TXBadger (2811) - Dallas, Texas, USA - APR 8, 2016
Pours a clear dark reddish coppery color with tan colored head. Caramel malt, sticky sweetness, and some light cereal on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied and thick. Finishes with caramel and nuts. tmoreau (4523) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - MAY 2, 2011
On tap at Great Dane-Doty for the beginning of Madison Craft Beer Week, and dispensed to a pint glass with a clear, mahogany color, modest, off white head foam that persisted as a ring and layer of film, and wavy cling to the lacing. The aroma was toasty, with caramel, sweetness, and plenty of smooth malt. The flavor added some moderate hop bitterness and a touch of toffee to the medium+ body, with a little dryness at the finish. A smooth, hefty Doppel, with a bit of warmth. phishpond417 (2088) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 3, 2010
I had this one last week after a few other brews and it pretty much finished me off. Really great tasting and super filling. Pours a dark but translucent copper colour with a small white head. Malt profile is noticeably upfront but integrated well with fresh hop notes. Big full bodied taste with a soft fruity undertone, it’s got some rich caramel notes running straight through it. On draught at the downtown Madison Great Dane brewpub. Pours a semi-clear reddish amber color brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of caramel malt, brown sugar, toffee and some mild alcohol. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of toffee, dark pitted fruits, caramel malt and some floral hops. Finish is semi-sweet with a brown sugar and caramel malt aftertaste with some mild bitterness. walrussell (192) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 1, 2009
good, not great. low carbonation, nice sweet brown sugar flavors, a slight alcohol burn. Scubatrip (610) - Annandale, Virginia, USA - MAR 10, 2009
On tap at the downtown location, pours dark red with a thin white head. Nothing much in the nose, and flavors were lacking imagination. It kinda had that cheap-Genny Light-hangs-around-too-long taste, finishes just a little malty. Gonna have to give this a "meh" rating. GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - MAR 17, 2008
Draft at the brewpub. Poured a clear copper color. Head was off white and left a bit of lace behind. Smelled of dark fruits and subdued alcohol. Medium bodied with alcohol, toffee, and plum flavors. Decent, but I didn’t like it as much as some of the previous raters. UWPeteO (12) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 13, 2007
Moderately malty flavor with a surprisingly clean finish. One of my favorite local dark beers.
