Brigadier (3680) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - JUL 21, 2007
On tap at downtown location

I was in the mood for a cask ale having just missed out on an interesting one the last time I visited. This time the only option was the Extra Pale Ale so I ordered a pint. It turned out to be not so bad and makes me look forward to the possible return of the cask ale tent at the Great Taste of the Midwest.

Aroma / Appearance - The hazy orange body was a bit murky but overall pretty transparent with a dash of head gracing the top. Pine, grapefruit and caramel stand out in the hoppy profile. A strong support cast includes oaky and maly notes. It’s not very complex but what should you expect from a pale ale?

Flavor / Palate - Watered down fruit punch Gatorade strikes the tongue on the first sip before the hops begin to appear. Pine and wood chips are most obvious but underneath is that oaky base. This is not a very complicated beer but at the same time I don’t think it was that bad either. For a warm summer day this would certainly be a good option. Once again the Great Dane has a good release that is usually available most of the time. Give it a try as part of a sampler if you are in town.

sliffy (2040) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUN 27, 2007
On tap @ the brewpub (downtown): Poured a clear copper color with a white head. Aroma, light citrus hop notes, and some pale malts. Flavor, citrus, with some pale bready malts, light caramel notes, a mild bitterness on the finish.

jewedekind (450) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 13, 2007
On cask. A nice golden pale with a frothy froth. Flowery in the nose with malty notes. Biscuits with honey. Flowery hops. Very nice pale. Creamy nature must be the "extra". High on the quaffability, just a might heavy for a session beer.

GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - FEB 18, 2007
Cask at the brewpub. Clear golden color. Head was thin, bubbly, and left some lace on the glass. Smelled of flowery, grapefruity hops. Smooth mouth feel. Grapefruit came out again in the flavor along with fresh malty cereal grain and lightly toasted bread. Modest hop bitterness.

howie (549) - DeForest, Wisconsin, USA - JUL 11, 2006
Cask. Slight haze, coarse short-lived head. Sharp citric aroma, some caramel malt. Bitter, but very drinkable due in part to cask carb levels. Uninspiring, but OK.

Ughsmash (7508) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - JUL 1, 2006
Cask at Great Dane. Poured a very slightly hazy medium golden with a short cap of white head. Nose was quite soft with floral, pine, and citrusy hops... respectable and balanced caramel base... lighter overall, and very pleasant. Caramel and toffee flavor base is surrounded by the same hop notes as the nose (lemon, pine, and floral)... simple but good. Exceptionally soft on the palate from the cask treatment with a moderate bitterness. Enjoyed it!

JPDIPSO (6223) - Wauwatosa, USA - JUN 29, 2006
Cask. Lightly hazed dark straw color with a frothy white head. Lemon and floor malt aromas. Flavors match the aromas with a quick linger and finish. Mild white grape in the finish.

Cask-conditioned, served in an standard bar imperial pint glass. Made a good appearance, poured a slightly hazy golden hued orange with a foamy, bubbly topped white head that settled into a thin foamy lacing, moderate carbonation. Had a dry leafy, grassy and grapefruit zesty nose with just a touch of pale maltiness at the fringes. A crisp, smoothly hop textured medium bodied mouth feel, very good drinkability. Dry hoppy, leafy, grassy and citric rind taste, lightly bitter on the tongue, really smooth in it’s hop bitterness, a sweet caramelized maltiness lies underneath, struggling to surface and a dry grassy and citric finish. This was quite tasty, a balanced bitterness, refreshing and highly quaffable, something I would have no problem with drinking all night.

tomxcs (321) - California, USA - MAY 27, 2006
On gravity cask May 26th at the downtown location. Pours an opaque orange with a frothy head. Aroma is light floral, semi-citric, earthy hops and a touch of very light caramel. Full, smooth mouthfeel and very light carbonation. Crusty, yeasty bread and light hoppy flavors; mildly bitttersweet. Yes, I could easily drink this all night long; a definite session beer, a straightforward but tasty brew.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2006 On cask tonight. The beer pours to a hazy light copper body. Dish soap bubbles for the head. The flavor is a deep graham cracker and light floral hops. Well balanced. The aroma is lightly floral and a touch of pale malt. Wet dog? Very light and hard to get much aroma. The palate is lightly carbonated, slightly bitter, slick and easy drinking. A decent, easy to drink beer. 5, 3, 8, 3, 14 = 3.3

Rerate on June 17th. The beer pours to a darker golden body with a soapy white head. The flavor is an intensee floral/grassy/perfumey hop. Almost spicy. The aroma is floral. Perhaps some oranges. Some graham crackers in the flavor too. The palate is fairly flat as expected with a nice mouthfeel. Much better the second time around.
