Named in honor of Fitchburg's first farmer, John Stoner's Oatmeal Stout is a good old-fashioned lesson in rich, creamy smoothness. Brewed with a high percentage of oats - which provides the creaminess - Oatmeal Stout is a sub-category of the Sweet Stout genre (as opposed to Dry Irish, Foreign, or Imperial Stout.) Various roasted and caramel malts lend the trademark sweet chocolate and coffee notes to this beer, while the special nitrogen-tap system delivers a dense head and emphasizes the smoothness.

On tap at Great Dane - Fitchburg... nitro pour. Clear, deep garnet color with a 1+" well-retained, whipped beige head. Very thorough lacing followed this down. Sweet, roasty chocolate, oats, and a little coffee provided an exceptionally enticing aroma. Flavor was ideal for a sweet stout... milky chocolate, lactic notes, fresh coffee roast, and caramel was all present and exquisitely blended. Smooth, creamy, and medium-bodied on the palate with a well-placed coffee bitterness on the finish (along with some milk chocolate). Very, very tasty brew that went down quickly.

(Fitchburg) Dark brown to black color. Dense cream colored head. Sweet malt and roasted malt, dark chocolate and touch of coffee aromas. Lighter feel, but creamy smooth. Dry and sweet malt flavors meld together. Dark chocolate, mocha and a touch of vanilla make for a pleasant quaff.

On draught at the Great Dane Fitchburg location. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a creamy off-white/beige head that slowly dissipates to an off-white ring. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some oatmeal, chocolate a hint of coffee and some flowery hops. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of toasted dark malt, chocolate a hint of coffee and some dry flowery hops. Finish is semi-sweet with some lactose presence and then a watery aftertaste.

Near black color with a thin head. Sweet malt aroma with a pinch of oats. Oddly enough, it almost smells dry at the same time. Some roasts and dryness in the taste. It does finish a bit dry and alcoholic. Not a typical sweet stout.

10 ounce draught mug at the Fitchburg location, June 21 2007. Nitro pour, satiny-smooth off-white head tops the jet body....smooth, quite pleasant cocoa-coffee aroma, like a mocha latte I guess, just as inviting and just as simple....ultra-smooth body, light crisp malts oversee a moderately sweet front, dry and woody finish, fair amount of coffee bitterness....nothing terribly wrong with this, but certainly the nitro helps kill what might have very good and keep it quite ordinary.

Nitro tap at the brewpub (Fitchburg). Poured a deep dark brown color with orange highlights. Head was creamy, thick, and light tan with good retention and lacing. Smelled of subdued chocolate. Smooth nitro mouth feel. Slightly sweet up front with light roasty bitternes at the end. Flavor was similar to the aroma without anything dominant. Decent.

Dark, rich, smooth, textured. A near perfect Oatmeal Stout with some coffee in there as well. Great Danes "Best in Show".
