(Draught, 2006 vintage, sampled August 2009) Pours a cloudy reddish brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of leather, old books, cherry, caramel, and toffee. Flavor of caramel, maple syrup, hops (earthy), fruit, brandy, and some light spices with a moderately dry finish.

On tap at the downtown location. Orange red pour. 1 finger head. The hops here are dominant and it is the fruity variety. Apricots, raisin, plum, and citrus hops. On tap at the brewpub in downtown Madison. Approx. 10 oz. pour. Consumed on 8-7-09. Listed as "Great Dane Old Scratch Ole Barleywine." Given that it was on tap in the summer, it shouldn’t be listed as a winter seasonal. Hops dominate the spicy, dry, chalky aroma. Grapefruit, plum, and pine scents. Smells great! Pours a hazy almost maroon. Small amount of thick beige head. Nice lacing. Sweet malts and spicy hops sum up the flavors. Fruity: pomegranate, passion fruit, mango, and golden raisin. Dry hops linger on the tongue. Perhaps a bit to sweet, but still quite good. Nice, long, hoppy-dry finish. Medium body. On tap at the brewpub in Madison (Downtown). Dark orange in color. Hoppy/malty aroma as expected from a barleywine. The flavor, however, offers a few unexpected things. On draught at the Great Dane Wausau location as Vintage Barleywine. Pours a hazy dark caramel colored brew with no head. Aroma of raisins, caramel malt, a hint of peach, some tropical fruit and a hint of citrus zest. Taste is full bodied, a touch of alcohol, with additional flavors of dark pitted fruit, candi sugar, some tropical fruit, raisin and brown sugar. On tap at Great Dane Hilldale. Ruby red to brown with a thin white head. Complex aroma with caramel, alcohol, brown sugar, dark fruit and some citrus. Smooth body tastes of alcohol, malt, sugar, caramel and citrus. Some warming on the back end and as expected the beer itself gets better as it warms.
